Liverpool manager Arne Slot has been asked whether the Reds had conversatios with Dutch midfielder Mats Wieffer.

Mats Wieffer has completed a move to Brighton & Hove Albion this summer with HITC reporting that the fee for the former Feyenoord midfielder is in the region of £25 -£30 million.

Under Roberto De Zerbi last season, Brighton had a raft of injury problems to contend with so the signing of a midfielder in Wieffer makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps one surprising aspect of the deal was that Liverpool never made a move for the Dutch midfielder this summer, who Arne Slot has worked with previously.

Slot responds to Wieffer move

The pair were together in Feyenoord and Liverpool could well do with an extra midfielder to bolster their ranks.

However, HITC has been told that the club do not consider the midfield a key priority and are prepared to give Stefan Bajcetic a chance in the engine room after his lengthy battle with injury.

As per Fabrizio Romano on X, Slot was asked about whether the Reds had any interest in the midfielder and if the 45-year-old held talks with the Dutchman.

“No, I haven’t spoken to Mats Wieffer to join Liverpool this summer,” Slot revealed. “I really enjoy meeting him, but I hope he doesn’t want to prove too much to his old trainer!”.

HITC has been told that Liverpool’s admiration for Wieffer precedes Slot’s arrival as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement.

The former Excelsior giant has been watched by the Merseyside giants for over 12 months but Wieffer decided a move to Brighton was the best thing for his career.

Wieffer could be a brilliant addition for Brighton

With Brighton having beaten off interest from Liverpool to sign the Dutch midfielder, this could well prove to be one of the smartest signings of the summer.

Interestingly, Wieffer has been described as “safe like the Bank of England” in possession and he could fit seamlessly into new manager Fabian Hurzeler’s plans.

As for Liverpool, the Reds have missed out on the signing of the Dutch midfielder but they seem focused on recruiting a defender with the club understood to be working hard to sign LOSC Lille’s Leny Yoro.
