England are about to embark on a new era having announced the departure of boss Gareth Southgate after losing the Euro 2024 final.
The Three Lions came up short in Sunday’s final, losing 2-1 at the hands of Spain in Berlin.
Mikel Oyarzabal’s late goal won it for Spain, meaning England have now lost back-to-back European Championship finals.
Gareth Southgate has now decided that the time has come for change, announcing his decision to step aside earlier on Tuesday.
Southgate departs having turned England from a complete laughing stock into a team who can go far in major tournaments.
Southgate will not be forgotten; he may not have got over the line in two finals, but he has set England up for success down the line.
Declan Rice message to Cole Palmer
The last few days won’t have been easy for England players.
Losing a final to a late goal is a heartbreaker for any player, but especially after some of the England squad suffered a penalty shootout defeat to Italy in the Euro 2021 final.
Those players now have to say goodbye to Southgate too, no doubt feeling emotional about his departure after eight years in the job.
England players will head off on a break ahead of the Premier League season but it will take some time to recover from Sunday’s disappointment.
Chelsea star Cole Palmer has now taken to Instagram to share a message after England’s exit.
Palmer consistently made an impact off the bench at Euro 2024 and scored the goal to bring England level in the final.
Palmer admitted on Instagram that he is ‘gutted’ with Sunday’s result but thanked everyone for their support whilst noting what an hour it was to feature for England.
Arsenal ace Declan Rice has responded with a heartfelt message having witness Palmer’s impact over in Germany.
“My boy man! some player and even better person! Enjoy your break,” said Rice.
Rice and Palmer will have to go back to being rivals in the Premier League next season with Arsenal and Chelsea set to lock horns.
Friendships will be parked when the two London rivals meet next season and their England connection will have to be forgotten about in the heat of battle.
Rice and Palmer should be part of the England side for a long time yet though, with both having huge futures ahead for club and country.
