Erik ten Hag’s comments after Manchester United’s loss to Rosenborg certainly raised a few eyebrows.
The Red Devils boss pulled no punches in his assessment of the game as he criticised his players for their 1-0 defeat in Norway.
Manchester United jetted out a youthful squad to face Rosenborg in their first pre-season friendly of the summer but Erik Ten Hag was less than pleased with what he saw.
The Dutchman said after the full-time whistle that his side should have played better and accused his players of dropping below his expected standards.
United are back in action this weekend when they continue their pre-season preparations with a friendly against Rangers at Murrayfield Stadium.
Ten Hag’s comments are bound to draw attention to the rest of his side’s pre-season preparations this summer.
Pundit rips into Erik ten Hag for ‘ridiculous’ comments
Ten Hag’s comments didn’t go down well with everybody and former Liverpool player Steve Nicol has suggested that the United manager is causing problems.
Speaking on ESPN, Nicol said “Don’t you think he’s got that completely and utterly, one-thousand percent wrong?
“Coming out and talking like that as if it’s a Premier League game – it’s ridiculous what he’s talking about.
“He doesn’t know what he’s doing, he’s causing problems already. What he’s saying there, now everybody has their eyes on United.
“You play it down at this time of the year. It means nothing to lose 1-0 to Rosenborg in July.”
After not holding back on his side’s performance, Ten Hag will hope for an improved performance against Rangers this week.
More United players are set to return to the fold after the conclusion of Euro 2024 and Copa America. They jet out to the United States for their pre-season tour later this month where they are due to face Liverpool and Arsenal.
