Cole Palmer and England suffered Euro 2024 heartache after they were beaten 2-1 by Spain in the final in Berlin on Sunday.

Chelsea’s Player of the Season came off the bench to score a wonder goal from outside the box to level the scores.

It was a well-guided finish from the Chelsea star, but that joy from the English team only lasted just over ten minutes, as Spain forward Mikel Oyarzabal scored a late winner to seal the title for his country.

England’s defeat to Spain in the Euro 2024 final was deserved, with Manchester City midfielder Rodri picking up the Player of the Tournament award.

Rodri played alongside Cole Palmer when he was coming through at the Etihad, so he would have seen him develop, before he moved on to the challenge of playing at Stamford Bridge.

Given that Palmer scored 22 Premier League goals and supplied 11 assists last season, many have been left surprised that he didn’t start a single game for his country at Euro 2024.

This is despite Phil Foden starting every match and failing to score or assist, and then coming under huge fire for his performances.

Nonetheless, after the game, Rodri was understandably delighted with his team’s win and he spoke about England pulling a goal back through Palmer.

The serial trophy winner dropped the truth about his former teammate and how he is going to be a ‘top player in the next years’, as he told ITV Sport.

Rodri praises Cole Palmer after Euro 2024 final

“We knew they didn’t need to do a great game to draw, to score goals,” said Rodri. “I know this guy (Palmer). Huge talent he is going to be. A top player in the next years. He put it in the corner (Palmer’s goal).

“In that moment we suffer a little bit. But this tournament, we showed something different that was key and we overcame this situation, so it was great.”

Cole Palmer should have played more

To think that Foden played so much, yet provided so little, is proof of how Gareth Southgate got this one horribly wrong.

The England manager didn’t have the bottle to drop one of his established starters and it has come back to bite him in the back.

Just like at Chelsea, where there has been adversity, Palmer has delivered and been one of very few shining lights under so much outside pressure.

England were looking for that time and time again, but unfortunately, Southgate didn’t provide him with more than 54 minutes in a single game.
