'Don't use these words': Haaland slams Sky presenter for Arsenal claim after he nets another hat-trick

Arsenal fans would have watched on with resignation as Erling Haaland netted a hat-trick during Manchester City’s 3-1 win at West Ham United on Saturday evening.

That’s back-to-back hat-tricks for the goal-scoring machine, he already has seven Premier League goals to his name and it’s not even the end of September.

Only hours earlier, Arsenal dropped points at home to Brighton in a game marred by controversy after Declan Rice was sent off.

Rice will miss Arsenal’s north London derby showdown against Tottenham after the international break, but he will be back for the trip to the Etihad.

Arsenal are two points behind the champions, and if they drop points at Spurs, and then proceed to lose at Manchester City, then the gap could already be seven and winter wouldn’t have kicked in yet.

But all of those are what could or couldn’t happen. What has happened is that Manchester City are two points ahead after their 100% to the new Premier League campaign and Haaland wasn’t too keen on the language used describing the London club.

Kelly Cates was interviewing the 24-year-old after his heroics against West Ham when she referenced the Arsenal game from earlier on in the day.

She rightfully pointed out that ‘Arsenal dropped points today’ because that was a match, especially on home soil, Mikel Arteta’s side were expecting and backing themselves to win.

But the veteran broadcaster then proceeded to claim that ‘one rival has already slipped up’, which Haaland didn’t take too kindly to.

The Premier League hitman urged Cates, daughter of Liverpool legend Kenny Dalglish, to use her words carefully, as he told Sky Sports.

Manchester City’s Erling Haaland reacts to Arsenal’s draw against Brighton

“Erling, you started off by saying that it’s important to get the win for the team,” said Cates. “It’s three wins from the first three games. Man City have looked fantastic already. Arsenal dropped points earlier on today, so one rival has already slipped up.

“Look, we are three games in. I know, I know, we are three games in,” added Cates after she watched Haaland react with a smirk on his face.

Haaland interrupted: “They haven’t slipped up yet. Don’t use these words, please.” To which the Sky presenter added: “Okay, they have dropped points already so far this season and Man City continuing with that 100% start.”

Manchester City and Arsenal Premier League title race

The issue Arsenal have is that Haaland is refreshed and looking stronger than ever. It needs to be noted that he, Kevin de Bruyne and Rodri all missed important games last season.

If that doesn’t happen again, and they start a large chunk, then you worry about how many points they can hit and even if 90 would be enough for those chasing them.

Arsenal narrowly missed out on the Premier League title last season by registering an improved 89 points, yet it still wasn’t enough.

Usually, Manchester City start slowly and they don’t even seem to be doing that, which is, once again, a huge worry for anyone trying to win the league.

£50m star Arsenal wanted before Sterling nets a hat-trick, Lamine Yamal calls him 'Player of the Month'

Arsenal left it pretty late on transfer deadline day.

Fans had to wait right until the death, but Arsenal secured the loan signing of Raheem Sterling in a huge signing for the club.

Arsenal had been looking for a right-sided forward all summer long, with several players linked, including one netting a hat-trick on Saturday to the delight of Lamine Yamal.

But nothing materialised, before Sterling was told he had no future at Chelsea after their opening game defeat to Manchester City.

That threw open many doors and questioned where Sterling would go next, including talk of Saudi Arabia, before he reunited with Arteta at Arsenal.

But it could have been very different for the club had they managed to lure one of their summer transfer targets towards them.

Sources told HITC earlier in the summer that Arsenal were keen on Barcelona’s £50m-rated star Raphinha, who has Premier League experience before when he was at Leeds United.

Naturally, the 27-year-old plays on the right, and just like Sterling, he can play across the front three, just like he did on Saturday.

Barcelona rolled back the years and tore apart Valladolid on their home patch by scoring seven, with Raphinha netting a hat-trick and making sure his team maintained a 100% start to the new La Liga season.

Lamine Yamal starred for Spain at Euro 2024 and he was impressed by what Raphinha produced by calling him ‘Player of the Month’ in the comments section of the Brazil star’s Instagram.

Raphinha has three goals and three assists from four games, with Barca sitting top of the table.

Raheem Sterling has a point to prove

Sterling’s performances at Chelsea were in the middle, but given the bar he set at Manchester City and the emotional mess the London club found themselves in, then the noise and negativity is heard louder.

Arsenal fans should be cheering on this move because it adds much-needed depth to the forward line and they have a multiple title-winner on board.

READ MORE: Mikel Arteta ‘amazed’ by Declan Rice sending off during Arsenal’s draw against Brighton

You don’t expect Sterling to start straightaway, in fact, he has a fight on his hands to play on either flank, with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli ahead of him so far, and Bukayo Saka is the main man on the right.

But this is the extra depth and Saka replacement fans have always wanted.

'Main character': Ian Wright delivers brutal reaction to Rice's red card for Arsenal against Brighton

Arsenal dropped their first points of the season when they recorded a 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Emirates on Saturday.

Declan Rice was sent off at the start of the second half for a second bookable offence, and ten minutes later, Brighton equalised through Joao Pedro.

That sending-off also means Rice will miss Arsenal’s trip to Tottenham after the international break.

You are only three games in, but Ian Wright is already fuming at a refereeing call because he thinks Arsenal fans have ‘got the hump’ following that second yellow card.

A free kick was awarded near the corner flag in Brighton’s half to the away team, with Joel Veltman attempting to take a quick free-kick, but Rice stood in the way, slowly knocked the ball out of play, he ended up getting booted to the ground himself, but when he got up, he was given his marching orders.

Chris Kavanagh was the on-field referee and his decision-making infuriated the Arsenal fans.

Wright certainly didn’t hold back because he claimed Kavanagh has ‘main character’ energy, as he took a brutal swipe at the official.

One of the biggest issues behind all of this was the fact that Brighton goalscorer Pedro, in the first half, booted the ball away when it went out of play and it was Arsenal’s throw.

Yet, he wasn’t booked, even though manager Mikel Arteta and the Arsenal players held their hands up asking why.

So, when Rice was treated differently in the second half, it left many Arsenal fans angry, including Wright, as he told Premier League Productions (31/08/24 at 2:40 pm).

Declan Rice’s red card

“You have to take the point,” said Wright. “I do think Declan (Rice) will look at the two yellows and be a little disappointed. But, at the same time, when you look at the refereeing and some of the decisions he (Chris Kavanagh) made. I think this referee had main-character energy anyway.

“But, at the same time, when people (Joao Pedro) are kicking the ball away in the first half and you aren’t booking them, then you kind of do feel a little aggrieved by that. This is why I think people were so upset. That challenge, yes, (Rice’s first yellow card). It’s one of those challenges where he has made a genuine attempt to get the ball, but you get booked for that.

“But then here (second yellow). You look at Veltman and what he is doing there. Veltman is trying to get him booked. Veltman has nobody to pass the ball to. He knows exactly what he is doing. Those are the things VAR can look at. He knows what he is doing. He is trying to get him sent off. Declan Rice doesn’t have to kick the ball, but at the same time, Declan is playing the game, but so is Veltman. You can recognise what Declan is doing, but you aren’t supposed to recognise what Veltman is doing?! He’s not actually looking to pass that to anyone. He’s acting like he is going to do it, so if it hits Declan, then he gets booked and he is off. And that’s what happened – if we are going to be doing stuff like that with people kicking the ball away, then do that in the first half with Joao Pedro. The ball went out of play and he still blasted the ball away. Do that as well. I don’t care about an apologetic face (from the referee when he had to send Rice off) and that. Do it properly all the way. That’s why Arsenal fans have got the hump.”

Arsenal’s trip to Tottenham

Arsenal had three tough away games awaiting them at the start of the campaign – Leandro Trossard helped Arsenal win at Aston Villa last week, which was a huge statement of intent.

And the next way trip was the north London derby followed up by a trip to the Etihad, with Champions League and League Cup games crammed in between.

Mikel Arteta 'amazed' by Declan Rice sending off during Arsenal's draw against Brighton

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has admitted he was ‘amazed’ by Chris Kavanagh’s decision to send off Declan Rice.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have dropped their first points of the season after Joao Pedro scored a second half equaliser following Declan Rice’s sending off.

In the first half, Pedro — who went on to score Brighton’s equaliser — kicked the ball away, but referee Christopher Kavanagh chose not to give a yellow card for the Brazilian fo.

Though after four minutes in the second period, Rice received a second yellow for nudging the ball away from Joel Veltman as he tried to take a quick free-kick.

Mikel Arteta ‘amazed’ by Declan Rice sending off

Speaking after the draw against Brighton, Mikel Arteta gave his verdict on the controversial sending off of the former West Ham United midfielder.

“I was amazed. Amazed, amazed, amazed because of how inconsistent decisions can be. In the first half, there are two incidents and nothing happens,” Arteta said.

“Then, in a non-critical area, the ball hits Declan (on the back of his leg), he turns around, he doesn’t see the player coming and he touches the ball.

“By law, he can make that call, but then by law he needs to make the next call, which is red card so we play 10 vs 10. This is what amazed me. At this level it’s amazing.

“Anyway I repeat myself – by law if you want to do it you have to do it, but you have to do it in the first half and play 10 against 10. That’s it. Very simple.”

Declan Rice big miss for Arsenal

Arteta was keen to praise Rice for his performance against Wolves on the opening day of the season for the North London club.

Rice will be suspended for Arsenal’s game against Tottenham Hotspur with Ange Postecoglou’s side hoping to win their first North London derby since the 3-0 win during the 2021/22 campaign.

Missing Rice against Tottenham will be a big blow and Arsenal simply have to win against Ange Postecoglou’s side following the resumption of the season after the international break.

Exclusive - Chelsea agree Jadon Sancho deal with Raheem Sterling heading to Arsenal

Chelsea have enjoyed a busy transfer deadline day and they have managed to secure some huge deals.

Chelsea have been targeting a deal for Jadon Sancho for the last few weeks and they have managed to get a deal over the line on the last day of window after agreeing terms with Manchester United.

Raheem Sterling will not be a team-mate of Sancho, though, as he is heading out of the club to Arsenal in what has been a frantic final 24 hours for Chelsea.

Jadon Sancho moves with £25million obligation

HITC revealed early on deadline day that Chelsea had made an initial loan move for Sancho as they matched an offer from Juventus that was already on the table.

The original bid for Sancho from Chelsea was a straight loan, but following talks an obligation was included in the deal and HITC is told that the price agreed upon with United is £25million, which will be due to be played next summer.

Sancho, who was a boyhood Chelsea fan, was eager to move back to London and he has now got his wish with a deal now agreed.

Raheem Sterling is linking up again with Mikel Arteta

With Sancho heading into Stamford Bridge, HITC can confirm that Raheem Sterling is heading to Arsenal with a loan deal agreed.

HITC revealed that Arsenal showed an interest last week when it became known that Sterling was not part of Chelsea’s long-term future, indeed Gunners boss Mikel Arteta confirmed his admiration for the player that he previously worked with at Manchester City.

“He’s someone I have really strong feelings about,” Arteta said.

Now after a day of talks, Arsenal have made their move and agreed a loan deal with Chelsea that will not include an option or obligation.

HITC is told that Arteta made it clear to Arsenal’s hierarchy that he believed Sterling was a ‘good fit’ to the club and would help them this season.

Exclusive: Future of £25m ace hinges on Arsenal loan deal for Chelsea star Raheem Sterling

HITC understands that Arsenal have continued talks with Chelsea over a deal for Raheem Sterling on deadline day.

Chelsea are desperate to offload the 29-year-old winger before Friday’s 11pm deadline.

HITC revealed on Friday morning that Arsenal have been offered the chance to sign Raheem Sterling, and talks between the two London rivals have continued throughout the day.

HITC understands that Arsenal have an interest in a possible loan deal for Raheem Sterling, but negotiations are ongoing over the final terms, including how much of his wages would be covered.

Arsenal would require Chelsea to cover a sizeable chunk of Sterling’s wages with the winger one of the highest earners at Stamford Bridge.

Sterling was also offered to Manchester United but Arsenal are now the only club in the running if he leaves Chelsea.

Raheem Sterling deal will have impact on £25m ace

There are only a few hours remaining until the window slams shut, but Arsenal have continued talks over a potential deal for Sterling.

Should they finalise a deal, HITC understands that Arsenal are willing to part ways with Reiss Nelson.

Four clubs are interested in a deadline day for Nelson, who is valued at £25million by Arsenal.

HITC understands that there is plenty of interest in Nelson and a potential move for the 24-year-old could go down to the wire.

Arsenal could cause transfer domino effect

If Arsenal green-light a deal for Sterling, it could cause a domino effect throughout the Premier League.

Nelson would be allowed to leave, and there are a number of top-flight clubs who are in the market for a winger.

Newcastle United have shown a late interest in Anthony Elanga as they look to sign a right-sided forward, and Nelson could be the perfect replacement for the Swedish star.

Alternatively, the Magpies could go directly to Arsenal to sign Nelson as they look to end their transfer window on a high.

'Put his name around': John Hartson warns Celtic about signing 'terrific' player before deadline

Celtic could be making some late moves in the summer transfer market, but there is one deal John Hartson doesn’t think is worth doing.

It doesn’t help Brendan Rodgers that Celtic sold Matt O’Riley late in the window because it now means they have to scramble late to bring in new faces.

The money was already there for the Bhoys to spend and now with £25 million added to the bank, the club can certainly push the boat out a little bit more.

The window slams shut on Friday evening and a few rumours are circulating around Parkhead, including the possibility of a return for a former star player.

Odsonne Edouard enjoyed a successful spell at Celtic before leaving for Crystal Palace in 2021 – but Edouard has found life difficult in the Premier League.

The 26-year-old has scored 18 goals in 95 Premier League games, in comparison to netting 60 in 104 top-flight matches in Scotland.

There is a suggestion that he could return, but Hartson isn’t so sure because he questioned if you should go back, as he told Go Radio.

The former striker thinks Celtic have the money to bring him in, but he just feels Palace are trying to offload him and using the name of his former club to get him gone.

Odsonne Edouard return to Celtic?

“I think so (Edouard will be out of the price range), although, Celtic have the money,” said Hartson.

“They have just brought in Idah. We know Maeda can play through the middle. Kyogo they have held onto. He would be a good signing for Man City, but a big, big loss for Celtic. 70-odd goals already in what two or three seasons? He is a box player and if you supply him with opportunities he is going to score. His goalscoring record doesn’t tell lies.

“So, I don’t know about Edouard. They say sometimes don’t come back. He was terrific for a few seasons and not so good in his last season. I think possibly he had his eyes on somewhere else. He is obviously running his contract down. Crystal Palace have started to put his name around, linking him with a few clubs and Celtic is one of those clubs because he is an ex-player here.”

Kyogo Furuhashi future

Ahead of the derby, Celtic fans will want the Glasgow derby king to be starting, or at the very least, on the bench for the game against Rangers.

There have been suggestions that Manchester City are looking at Kyogo, but he is someone too valuable to lose.

Exclusive: RB Leipzig make move for £35 million Aston Villa target, Villa's stance on move explained

RB Leipzig have made their move for Aston Villa target Lutsharel Geertruida this summer with over 24 hours to go before the window slams shut.

Aston Villa have been busy in the summer transfer market with the club preparing to play in the UEFA Champions League for the first time in the Premier League era.

Villa have signed Amadou Onana from Everton, Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, Ross Barkley from Luton Town and are closing in on the addition of a defender.

HITC reported that Villa had reached an agreement with Feyenoord for the transfer of Lutsharel Geertruida but the Dutch defender has still not completed his move to Villa Park and now another team has entered the race.

RB Leipzig enter race for Lutsharel Geertruida

HITC understands that RB Leipzig are now ready to make a move for the Dutch defender as Villa try and get a deal over the line.

Leipzig defender Mohamed Simakan looks set to move to the Saudi Pro League with Al-Nassr and the Bundesliga giants are keen on Geertruida and have opened talks with the Dutch side to try and get a deal done.

Geertruida has always been on Leipzig’s radar, but they’ve accelerated efforts today as Simakan appears to be on his way to Saudi Arabia.

That’s seen them push ahead of Aston Villa for him. The Villans had shown interest in a late deal but ‘cannot reach a deal’ at this point.

That’s left the path open for Leipzig, who had already targeted the player last year and are now pushing to get a deal done with Feyenoord.

HITC understands that Leipzig have gone for Feyenoord’s Geertruida after Benfica turned down their approach for Antonio Silva.

Where Aston Villa stand on Lutsharel Geertruida

HITC reported that Villa had struck an agreement for Geertruida but as of yet the Midlands club have not gotten the deal over the line for the Dutch defender.

Sources have told HITC that Villa have agreed a fee with Feyenoord but cannot proceed with the agreement as they need to sell players before tomorrow’s deadline.

With the additions that Villa have made to their side this summer, sales will surely be required but time is running out for the Midlands club.

Leipzig have been interested in Geertruida for a while and it would be a cruel blow if the German side hijacked Villa’s deal for the Dutch defender.

'No offence': Agbonlahor can't believe who £30m Arsenal star will sign for before deadline day

Arsenal will be looking to clear a few members of their squad ahead of transfer deadline day.

It has been a productive window for the team, adding more legs to the midfield and also further strengthening the backline.

Arsenal signed Mikel Merino in one of the deals of the summer, but not forgetting centre-back and Italian star, Riccardo Calafiori.

The likes of Emile Smith Rowe have joined Fulham and Fabio Vieira has returned to Porto, so the books could be balanced.

There is talk of Arsenal signing Raheem Sterling amid his exile from the Chelsea squad, as the England international looks to pick his career back up.

But whilst Sterling could possibly re-find his form again under Mikel Arteta – if he moves – another player currently at the club could be doing the same, but going in the other direction.

David Raya has taken the gloves from Aaron Ramdale and now the Englishman has been resigned to sitting on the bench and watching his career fade away.

There is talk of Ramsdale joining Southampton in a possible deal that has left Gabby Agbonlahor pretty shocked, as he told talkSPORT (28/08/24 at 4:40 pm).

The former striker thinks the £30 million signing should have ‘better options’ than playing for a newly promoted team because this would be a permanent transfer and not a loan deal.

Aaron Ramsdale to join Southampton

“Don’t you think he should have better options, though?” questioned Agbonlahor. “Would he be expecting better options, Ramsdale, than Southampton, no offence?”

David Raya is now Arsenal’s number one

Ramsdale wasn’t doing much wrong when he was in between the sticks and many were left surprised when Arteta decided to change it.

You also need to add in the fact that in the world of PSR and FFP, you have to be careful with every pound you put on the table now, but Arteta felt this change was needed.

Fast forward to the present and Arsenal have become stronger with Raya in between the sticks and he deserves to be the club’s number one.

That was proven with his stunning save to deny Ollie Watkins at the weekend, which in the end, helped Arsenal to a very important victory.

Everton 'tried to recover' another Lyon player in Maxence Caqueret, his answer was emphatic

Everton reportedly made an attempt to sign Lyon’s promising midfielder Maxence Caqueret this summer but the move failed to materialise.

Sean Dyche’s Everton have begun the Premier League season with two defeats in a row but the Toffees have got their first win of the season under their belts with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Doncaster Rovers in the Carabao Cup.

Everton have made multiple first-team signings this summer as the Toffees hope to avoid relegation as the Merseyside club are preparing to go into their new stadium for the 2025/26 season.

Everton are closing in on the signing of Orel Mangala but reports from France have indicated the Belgian may not have been the only Lyon midfielder who Dyche’s side attempted to sign.

Everton ‘made offer’ to sign Lyon’s Maxence Caqueret

According to a post on X from French journalist Fabrice Hawkins, Everton made an attempt to land midfielder Maxence Caqueret from Lyon.

The Toffees are seemingly determined to add a midfield option to their side with Amadou Onana departing Everton for Aston Villa for £50 million.

A deal for Lyon’s Mangala is understood to be in the final stages, with the French side happy to loan him out to the Premier League until the end of the season.

But it appears Everton also tried for a different Lyon player, with Hawkins reporting that they ‘tried to recover’ Caqueret as well.

Unfortunately for them that failed before it even took off, with the midfielder not responding to approaches from the Toffees at this point. Perhaps that is why they then turned towards Mangala instead.

Everton close in on Mangala move

HITC understands that the Belgian midfielder is open to moving to Goodison Park this summer and Mangala had impressed throughout his stint in the Premier League for Nottingham Forest.

Everton are desperate to bolster their squad before Friday and Textor is set to use his French club Lyon to help the Toffees make further additions to their squad before this week’s deadline.

Sources have told HITC that Caqueret and Mangala may not be the only deals that the Merseyside club complete from Lyon with prospective owner John Textor keen to help Everton have the best chance of remaining in the Premier League.

‘They sign everyone’: Sky pundit shocked Chelsea haven’t signed ‘remarkable’ player

To nobody’s surprise, Chelsea are expected to be one of the big talking points during the last few days of the summer transfer window.

Chelsea have stolen the headlines with the players they have signed, want to let go or have sold.

Raheem Sterling is expected to leave Chelsea, with Enzo Maresca making it clear he wants a certain type of forward player.

In terms of wide players, the London club are bulked up, with Chelsea signing Pedro Neto from Wolves to challenge the likes of Mykhailo Mudryk, Noni Madueke, Christopher Nkunku, Joao Felix and Cole Palmer, who are all able to deploy those roles.

But that bonafide striker is still much-wanted at Stamford Bridge, even though Nicolas Jackson is leading the line and he scored during the thumping win at Wolves.

Victor Osimhen continues to get linked with Chelsea, but he isn’t the man Michael Dawson thinks they should be signing.

In truth, if you asked the Chelsea fans, then he would be their dream purchase full stop, but with days left until the window, he is still a Napoli player and he hasn’t found a new club.

Another player, who has 12 months remaining on his contract, and is expected to leave is Ivan Toney.

Dawson explained how ‘I am a big fan’ of the Brentford hitman and he is ‘surprised’ he hasn’t found a new club yet.

The ‘remarkable’ Toney has also been linked with Arsenal, but as of yet, no-one seems to be putting the money down on the table for his services.

Dawson joked how Chelsea ‘sign everyone’, but they are yet to push and bring in a player like Toney with the clock ticking, as he told Sky Sports News.

Ivan Toney at Chelsea

“I would be surprised (if Toney is still a Brentford player by the end of the window),” said Dawson. “When he got left out last week, that was a surprise to me with the new signing Thiago being out for a long period. Brentford are trying to get money as he is going into his final year.

“I am a massive fan of Ivan Toney. I can’t believe another Premier League club hasn’t come in to get him. The Chelsea’s. Chelsea sign everyone.

“You are getting goals. Guaranteed in a Brentford team – 12 months ago, people were talking about him being an £80 million player. I am disappointed. There are a lack of centre-forwards and goalscorers out there.”

Ivan Toney transfer fee

Sources have told HITC that Brentford aren’t moving from their £50 million transfer fee for Toney, despite the risk that they can lose him for nothing next summer.

Given that Saudi Arabia have also been mentioned, then it isn’t a surprise, but something has got to give sooner rather than later.

Toney is at the peak of his powers and is capable of hitting the 20-goal mark, with last season’s ban causing havoc to his season.

Mikel Arteta hails new Arsenal ace who is a 'winner' after transfer finally confirmed

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has commented on their addition of Real Sociedad midfielder Mikel Merino for £32 million.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal have been rather quiet in the summer transfer window with the North London club believing that they only need one or two key additions to their squad before they could make a serious push for the Premier League title.

Arsenal completed the signing of Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna with the Euro 2024 star set to play a key role in their defence.

As well as a defensive addition, Arsenal have completed the signing of midfielder Mikel Merino after weeks of negotiations with Real Sociedad to land the former Newcastle United midfielder.

Mikel Arteta comments on Mikel Merino’s addition

HITC had reported that Arsenal were keen on Merino back in July and the Gunners have confirmed the signing of the midfielder. He is surely set to be in the squad for this weekend’s clash against Brighton & Hove Albion at the Emirates Stadium.

Speaking to Arsenal’s website, the Spanish manager has been full of praise for the midfielder when asked what the former Newcastle United ace.

“Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility,” Arteta said. “He has played at the top of the game at both club and international level for a number of seasons now.

“Mikel will make our squad significantly stronger, with his technical ability, together with his strong and positive character and personality.

“As we all saw in the summer, Mikel is also a winner, with his strong performances throughout the Euros helping Spain win the tournament. We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him.”

Arteta following Calafiori blueprint with Merino

When Arsenal completed the signing of Calafiori, Arteta was keen to highlight his character as one of the key reasons behind the signing of the Bologna defender.

As for Merino, Arteta has praised a similar characteristic in the Spanish midfielder and it certainly seems that he has very specific characters that he wants in his Gunners team ahead of fighting Manchester City, and potentially Liverpool, battling it out for the league crown.

Merino excelled for Spain during Euro 2024 and the midfielder will have a lot of buzz about him ahead of his Arsenal debut.

'Why would you leave'... Rafael Van der Vaart questions Nottingham Forest's big money signing over decision to move

Nottingham Forest’s potential key striker signing has been questioned about his decision to move to the Premier League club this summer.

Nottingham Forest are attempting to add a striker to their team with just days to go before the window slams shut and the club are working hard.

HITC reported over the weekend that Nottingham Forest have struck an agreement with Feyenoord for Santiago Gimenez with the Mexican forward set to fly into England to complete his move to Nuno Espirito Santo’s side.

Earlier this summer, Tottenham earmarked Gimenez as their number-one striker target but it is Forest who are closing in on a deal for the prolific Mexican forward.

Rafael Van der Vaart questions Santiago Gimenez’s decision to leave

The Mexican forward struck 26 goals under Liverpool manager Arne Slot and former Tottenham and Real Madrid midfielder Rafael Van Der Vaart has questioned Gimenez’s decision to leave Feyenoord.

“I think he’s a good striker, but Feyenoord is just a really nice club,” the Dutchman said as per FR12.nl. “Why would you leave for Nottingham Forest? Then it’s for money, that’s fine.

“If Feyenoord can get money, they might do it. Just for the player himself, I think Feyenoord is a much nicer club to play for.”

Former Feyenoord striker Pierre van Hooijdonk believes Giménez should consider Italy or Spain as the next step in his career.

“Some things have changed in England, of course. In the Netherlands we don’t talk about Nottingham Forest and Brentford, they are not such attractive clubs for us. Only they are in the biggest competition in the world where every player wants to belong,” Van Hooijdonk explained.

Forest closing in on key purchase of Gimenez

Despite Van Der Vaart questioning the move, Forest are closing in on one of the most prolific strikers in Europe and with the attacking talent potentially playing behind him, this could be a superb move.

HITC have been told that a deal has been agreed in principle worth £28 million, rising to £30 million. Gimenez, who was the subject of an initial £21 million offer a week ago, emerged as Forest’s top target for the number nine role.

Sources have told HITC that a deal to take Gimenez to the East Midlands is set to be confirmed in the next 24 hours with the South American forward vital if Forest are to have any chance of staying in the Premier League this season.

'The gaffer is a great man': James Maddison says ‘ridiculous’ Tottenham player has to win back Ange's trust

Ange Postecoglou has been a breath of fresh air since he became Tottenham Hotspur manager last summer.

Spurs are blessed that they have several people within the club who interact with the media, no matter the topic, very well and are engaging.

The man in the dugout is one of them and so is playmaker, James Maddison, who also speaks well in interviews with the media.

That’s why when certain issues are brought to the front of the table, you then need clarity and a no-nonsense nature.

The Tottenham players would have already known that Postecoglou isn’t a man to be messed with because he is someone with very high standards.

The great thing about Postecoglou is that he isn’t afraid to express what he thinks – the London club also had that with Jose Mourinho and Antonio Conte.

But with the new Premier League season just kicking off, one player has already landed himself in hot water.

Yves Bissouma was suspended by his manager and left out of Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Leicester for inhaling nitrous oxide or laughing gas, which he posted on social media.

Ange made it clear that the midfielder needs to make amends and Bissouma returned for Tottenham’s win over Everton and he opened the scoring.

Maddison explained how Bissouma is a ‘ridiculous footballer’ and that he has skills ‘not many have’.

But the England star made it clear that his midfield teammate still needs to win back the trust of the manager and that Postecoglou is a ‘great man with good morals’, as he told Sky Sports Premier League.

Yves Bissouma return after suspension

“Yeah, definitely,” said Maddison about Bissouma repaying the faith Postecoglou has put in him.  “We all know Yves’s ability. He is a ridiculous footballer, at times.

“His natural ability and technical prowess just on the ball and how he is receiving it in the right areas, he has got a skill that not many have. I think he made amends.

“The gaffer is a great man with good morals, so I know he won’t let him slack off now. He has got to keep working hard and keep repaying the trust of the manager for putting him back in. It was a pretty good start for him.”

Tottenham’s young midfielders

Tottenham signed Archie Gray from Leeds this summer and Lucas Bergvall linked up with the squad for the first time.

Not forgetting 21-year-old Pape Matar Sarr, who was quality last season, and is probably unlucky not to be starting.

Spurs’ midfield has some great youth, energy and promise. If they can add in stability, getting back into the Champions League, then there are exciting times ahead.

Perhaps, with the team in Europe, they need to add more depth, but the same could be said for the backline.

'Look...': Tim Sherwood is loving the ‘aggression’ shown by Tottenham star under Ange after Everton win

Tottenham registered their first win of the new Premier League season when they breezed past Everton 4-0 on Saturday.

The returning Yves Bissouma, a Son Heung-min brace and a Cristian Romero header delighted Ange Postecoglou.

The Spurs boss is now in his second season as manager and it’s clear as day as to what he wants from his team from back to front.

There are some teams, like Unai Emery’s Aston Villa and now Arne Slot’s Liverpool, who play with a calmness and they aren’t pressing from the front like the game depends on it.

Those in north London are the complete opposite because they are 100 miles per hour and they never take their foot off the accelerator.

At times, as proven during Tottenham’s 1-1 draw at Leicester City, it can hurt them, but against Everton, they were at their best.

It should and could have been more, but one player who epitomises the way the team plays is the man with the armband.

After Harry Kane and Hugo Lloris left Spurs last summer, Postecoglou proceeded to hand the captaincy to probably the most popular player in the dressing room, Son.

Tim Sherwood expressed how he loves the ‘aggression’ Son showed without the ball during his side’s win over Everton.

The proof of that was when he chased down Jordan Pickford, forced him into a mistake, robbed the ball off him and duly put the ball into the back of the net to double his side’s lead.

Sherwood was critical of Pickford for what he did, but he made sure to give Son his flowers, as he told Premier League Productions (24/08/24 at 8:40 pm).

Son Heung-min leading from the front

“You know with Tottenham, you are going to get an aggressive press from the front players and none more so than Sonny,” said Sherwood.

“Look at his aggression. Pickford must know that there isn’t any time to take a touch out of your feet like that and he got what he deserved. And Sonny nicks it off it. It’s really, really poor from Pickford.”

Dominic Solanke’s injury

Solanke made his Tottenham debut at Leicester, then proceeded to get injured – he played every league game for Bournemouth last term.

That just proves that Spurs have no luck, but it meant that Son stepped into the number nine role and he could be leading the line for a while yet.

Tottenham fans will be hoping Solanke is back after the international break because it’s the small matter of the north London derby against Arsenal.

It’s going to be a huge September for the club because, added to Europa League matches, they travel to St James’ Park, take on Arsenal and also play Manchester United at Old Trafford.

’Superb’: Gary Lineker names Liverpool duo already impressing under Arne Slot after win over Brentford

Arne Slot began life at home as Liverpool manager with a comfortable 2-0 win over Brentford on Sunday at Anfield.

Liverpool beat Ipswich Town for their opening Premier League match of the new season and the early signs were positive then.

And in front of his supporters, Slot has made a ‘pretty impressive’ start, according to Gary Lineker, with Liverpool and Arsenal the only teams yet to concede after two matches.

Only four teams have made 100% starts, with Arsenal’s win over Aston Villa perhaps being the statement game and result of the weekend.

Under Jurgen Klopp, the Reds were aggressive, in your face and 100 miles per hour. It resulted in success across the board for the legendary German.

But under their new manager, Liverpool seem to be far more relaxed, controlled and less aggressive, all whilst maintaining that ruthless threat in the final third.

Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah were the goalscorers against Brentford, with the opening goal coming after 13 minutes following a rapid counter-attack.

The Merseyside giants then had to wait until the 70 minute for Salah to score in back-to-back matches, with Lineker stating that the Egyptian looks ‘sharp’ and how his team should have scored more.

Another player who Lineker thinks is already impressing under Slot is Trent Alexander-Arnold and he was dubbed ‘superb’ for his display, as he told the Rest is Football.

It’s early days, but Liverpool fans should be quietly happy with what they are seeing from their new manager because it’s never easy settling in so quickly and with such an impact.

Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah praised

“I thought they were pretty impressive,” said Lineker about Liverpool’s performance. “They could have scored a lot more goals. I thought, once again, like last week. Trent Alexander-Arnold was superb. Mo Salah is looking sharp. A good start for Arne Slot.

“They were very dominant throughout. They had lots of chances. The goalkeeper (Brentford’s Mark Flekken) played well.”

Liverpool’s out-of-contract players

Liverpool fans will be rightfully screaming at their club to hand the likes of Alexander-Arnold and Salah new deals – both are out of contract next summer.

Salah has admirers in Saudi Arabia, whilst Alexander-Arnold has been linked with Real Madrid and the worst-case scenario could happen.

READ MORE: 50 MOST LIKELY PREMIER LEAGUE, EFL AND EUROPEAN SUMMER 2024 FOOTBALL TRANSFERS

If those two, along with captain Virgil van Dijk, head for the exit door next summer, then you have to question the club’s call and decision-making.

In truth, Liverpool shouldn’t be in a situation where three of their most important players are in such a position because that is very poor management.

Ian Wright delivers his verdict on Wan-Bissaka's performance after West Ham's win at Palace

West Ham United have lift off in the Julen Lopetegui era after they beat Crystal Palace 2-0 on Saturday at Selhurst Park.

West Ham were beaten by Aston Villa in Lopetegui’s first game as manager, but now he has got the ball rolling with Aaron Wan-Bissaka playing a part after his transfer from Manchester United.

Wan-Bissaka ended his career at Manchester United by winning the FA Cup last season, but his services were no longer wanted by Erik ten Hag.

West Ham pounced and brought him on board, as he has already showcased what he is going to bring to the table for the coming season.

At Manchester United, Wan-Bissaka displayed a high level of defensive skill and the ability to defend against any player one-v-one.

But when he was brought onto the pitch after an hour against Palace, with the game still goalless, it was his final third play that shone brightly.

The 26-year-old didn’t get the assist for Tomas Soucek’s goal, but he played a part when he won the ball back and then delivered the ball brilliantly around the corner to the on-rushing Jarrod Bowen, and after a scramble, they opened the scoring.

Lopetegui has opted against starting many of his new signings, but you feel Wan-Bissaka is now pretty close to that with Vladimir Coufal getting the nod so far.

Ian Wright hailed the right-back for his impact off the bench and how he came back to haunt his former side, as he told Premier League Productions (24/08/24 at 8:40 pm).

Aaron Wan-Bissaka impact

“Wan-Bissaka does fantastic here where he won that ball,” said Wright. “Kept hold of it, kept it going, a brilliant ball inside and from here, you are hoping they can clear their lines Palace. They can’t quite clear their lines.

“Then there he (Soucek) just coming onto it and he just puts it into the goal. Really good goal and work there from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, a former Palace player.”

West Ham’s summer transfer window

Soler has been compared to Martin Odegaard, but that also means the Hammers need to trim their squad.

‘I don’t listen to him’: Kris Boyd disagrees with Chris Sutton’s transfer claim about O'Riley and Celtic

Celtic began life without Matt O’Riley with a comfortable 3-0 win at St Mirren on Sunday.

Paulo Bernardo was the man to come into the middle of the park as Celtic made yet another rapid start in the Scottish Premiership, thanks to another wondergoal from Callum McGregor, with Reo Hatate and Alistair Johnston also getting on the scoresheet.

Leading up to the game, all the talk was about O’Riley closing in on a transfer to Brighton after months of speculation.

Sources have told HITC that, Celtic will be getting up to £30 million for O’Riley and he was left out of the matchday squad for St Mirren to complete that move.

Brendan Rodgers returned to Parkhead last summer and he helped take the game of the playmaker to a completely different level.

The 23-year-old scored 19 goals and supplied 18 assists in all competitions for Celtic, including three assists in the Champions League.

This move, to a Premier League team and for a club-record fee, isn’t a surprise because many inside the club saw it coming months ago, it was just a case of where will he end up.

But Kris Boyd has completely disagreed with what Chris Sutton has said about O’Riley’s move, even if he had his Rangers hat on and ‘delighted’ by his imminent exit.

Sutton thinks the Denmark international is leaving 12 months too early and should stay on board as the Bhoys continue to dominate on the domestic circuit and try to improve in the Champions League.

But Boyd, whilst joking that he ‘doesn’t listen’ to what Sutton ever has to say, claimed that O’Riley has ‘hit the glass ceiling at Celtic’ and this is the right time to move, as he told Sky Sports News (24/08/24 at 12:20 pm).

Matt O’Riley to join Brighton

“I am absolutely delighted that he is leaving Celtic,” laughed Boyd. “You need to tell me what he (Sutton) said because I don’t really listen to him. When I sit beside him, I don’t really listen to him.

“Celtic have gone down the route of bringing in younger players. Giving them a platform and moving them on and Matt O’Riley has hit that glass ceiling at Celtic. I know people will say ‘stay and have another crack at the Champions League’.

“But it’s the equivalent of playing in the Champions League, playing in the Premier League. You look at him now, he has matured. He has got the goals and assists. He has improved week in and week out. You have got to give him a lot of credit as well. Usually, when you are linked with big money moves, I am not saying you down tools, but your performances start to drift because your mind starts to drift elsewhere. He has been excellent at the start of the season, Matt O’Riley. For the fee, it has been spoken about £25 million. Celtic have been unbelievable in the transfer market over recent years.”

Celtic’s transfer business

Signed for £1.5 million and now sold for a huge profit, this is a prime example of Celtc’s transfer policy working and keeping the club healthy from within.

But you still can’t blame the fans for wanting the board to push the boat out a little bit more.

On the domestic stage, Celtic are fine and they will continue to dominate, even though they had a bit of a stumble last season, and yet they were still crowned champions.

Next Friday, the transfer window will slam shut, with Kyogo also linked with a move to Manchester City and he is someone the club simply can’t afford to lose.

Jermaine Pennant thinks Arsenal trio not good enough to win PL title after 'very lucky' win at Villa

Jermaine Pennant thinks Arsenal were ‘very lucky’ to secure a 2-0 win at Aston Villa on Saturday at Villa Park.

The game was ultimately won by goals from substitute Leandro Trossard and midfielder Thomas Partey in the second half.

Aston Villa missed two huge chances through Ollie Watkins in the first and second half and they were then duly punished for their lack of ruthless nature.

Arsenal lost home and away to Villa last season, so that was a huge talking point heading into the match and how it was probably already must-win for Mikel Arteta.

They have a very difficult opening three away matches to start the campaign – Villa Park, Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and then the Etihad.

That will test the credentials of this team because if they claim maximum points then it will seriously boost their title chances even if it’s still very early in the campaign.

But Pennant has raised doubts about some Arsenal players and if they are good enough to push the team over the line.

Arsenal lost the Premier League title narrowly last season, but they still had another record-breaking season in front of goal and had the best defence in the league (29 conceded).

The team’s defence isn’t the issue for Pennant, but what they have in the final third and how they ‘need a number nine’.

The former Arsenal academy product doesn’t think Kai Havertz is good enough to lead the line and win the title, as he also put Gabriel Jesus in that boat.

Arsenal’s lack of bench strength was also spoken about, even though Trossard came off the bench to score a very crucial opening goal against Villa.

But once again, Pennant doesn’t think the Belgium international can continue that run of scoring from the bench time and time again, as he told talkSPORT.

Arsenal’s ‘very lucky’ win at Aston Villa

“Absolutely, (Arsenal have got lucky), hence the way Arsenal fans are cheering and celebrating after the game,” said Pennant. “The chances Arsenal fans would have seen fallen to Ollie Watkins. They are very lucky to go away with three points.

“I am changing my opinion. I think at the start I thought Arsenal were going to be the favourites, but I have changed my mind and say they aren’t going to be favourites. Jesus is injured. I am looking at the depth. Who have they got? If you look at the top teams, they have got strength in depth. That’s something Arsenal haven’t really got.

“Yes, they brought on Trossard for him to ultimately win them the game, but you look at their strikers. Havertz, is he a striker that’s going to win you the Premier League? They need a number nine to win the Premier League. With this squad right now, I don’t think they will be able to topple Manchester City. Trossard isn’t going to come off the bench and score every single time. Jesus isn’t a guy who is going to get you 15-20+ goals a season. He isn’t a goalscorer anymore.”

Kai Havertz, Leandro Trossrd and Gabriel Jesus

Havertz was dubbed a flop before joining Arsenal and despite scoring 13 Premier League goals and supplying seven assists last term, those critics still keep talking.

Arsenal have everything they need to win the title, it’s just now about winning those extra matches because you need 90+ points to win the league.

Villa home and away. West Ham at home. Games against Fulham were the issue and they have got over one tricky line at Villa Park.

'Wow': Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard stunned by 'sensational' Arsenal player against Aston Villa

Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard helped Arsenal to a crucial 2-0 win against Aston Villa on Saturday evening at Villa Park.

Only two games in and you can call this a statement victory for Mikel Arteta’s men.

Aston Villa beat Arsenal twice last season, so it was paramount they proved that they had learned their lesson.

From Bukayo Saka to David Raya, they helped Arsenal secure a statement three points and a clean sheet, whilst riding their luck thanks to some very poor finishing from Ollie Watkins, and ensuring they have made a 100% start to the new season.

Raya is going to make the headlines again for his quite ridiculous save to deny Watkins from close-blank range when the scores were still 0-0 in the second half.

But captain Odegaard and midfield machine Rice were keen to laud and applaud another one of their teammates.

Arsenal had the best defence in the Premier League last season, conceding only 29 goals, and they are yet to concede after two matches.

It’s obvious that it’s going to take a lot to try and get past this Arsenal’s defence and it wouldn’t be a surprise if they repeat last season’s feat.

One man who has been Mr Consistent for the Gunners is their rising 23-year-old star Saliba because he is probably the best defender in the Premier League right now.

From how he reads danger to his last-ditch tackle to deny Jacob Ramsey when he went through one-v-one, the Frenchman was one of the best players on the pitch at Villa Park.

After the game, Rice and Odegaard, along with many others, lauded and applauded the ’sensational’ Saliba in the comments section of his Instagram post.

William Saliba’s performance against Aston Villa

“Big team performance. Thank you, Gooners,” wrote Saliba.

Odegaard applauded the France international and simply posted ‘wow’, whilst the Arsenal fans told him that he is a ‘Rolls Royce’ defender.

Rice added that Saliba was ’sensational’, with Jurrien Timber also impressed and Gabriel sending him heart emojis.

Who is the best defender in the Premier League?

Virgil van Dijk could leave Liverpool next summer and you feel Saliba could then sit on top of the throne if the Dutchman departs.

Yes, at this moment, the Arsenal man is the best-performing centre-back in the league, but van Dijk has the pedigree and trophies from recent years.

Arsenal’s depth at the back has got stronger and only makes life more difficult for their opponents.
