Brighton & Hove Albion’s big summer signing could be planning a move away from the club already, according to a former Feyenoord footballer.
This headline may well frighten you Brighton & Hove Albion fans with the Dutch midfielder Mats Wieffer only joining the Seagulls earlier this summer.
Liverpool were understood to be keen on Wieffer but Brighton, who have been brilliant in the transfer market during recent seasons, won the race for the Feyenoord midfielder.
Wieffer has incredible ability on the ball and his engine will make him an almost certain hit in the Premier League. However, Brighton will know this all too well but good performances leads to transfer interest.
Mats Wieffer could follow ‘the Wijnaldum route’
Wieffer, as mentioned, only completed his move to the South Coast earlier this summer but former midfielder Karim El Ahmadi, whose comments on the Brighton man to Algemeen Dagblad are covered by website PSV Fans today.
It was certainly a surprise to see Wieffer move to Brighton, considering the Dutch midfielder could well have moved to a Champions League club if he wanted to.
However, one reason for this could be the fact that Wieffer wanted a move to Brighton with the eventual aim of moving to an even bigger club in the future, if he performs as expected at the AMEX Stadium for Fabian Hurzeler.
“I still think there is a difference between clubs like Nottingham Forest and Brighton,” he said, referencing Santiago Gimenez reportedly not wanting to join the latter.
“Of course, Brighton does not play European football, but they have been playing very good football for a while. For Mats Wieffer, this could be the Georginio Wijnaldum route. After Newcastle United, he could immediately move on to Spurs or Liverpool.”
Wieffer good enough for top Premier League move but could follow Wijnaldum route
If Liverpool were indeed interested in the Dutch midfielder, it is certainly a surprise that the Reds did not sign the Feyenoord ace, particularly with the Arne Slot connection.
Whether this is a stop-gap move or not is almost irrelevant for Brighton fans. However, Wieffer would not be the first Dutch midfielder to make that move.
Georginio Wijnaldum was one such success story, with the midfielder moving to Newcastle United before eventually transferring to Liverpool, and El Ahmadi believes Wieffer could be eyeing up a similar path to the top.
