Liverpool and Manchester United have started the new Premier League season with three points, as some interesting Jarrad Branthwaite rumours emerge.

Amid the pressure and noise about last season’s performances, Erik ten Hag’s side recorded a 1-0 win over Marco Silva’s Fulham at Old Trafford.

Liverpool began life under Arne Slot by beating Ipswich Town 2-0, with the old guard doing the work and getting the job done.

Both teams have had very different transfer windows, Manchester United have backed their manager, but those on Merseyside have remained reserved.

One area of the pitch Manchester United have heavily invested in is the centre-back spot, with Matthijs de Ligt joining from Bayern Munich and Leny Yoro arriving from Lille.

Everton centre-back Branthwaite was a player Manchester United very much wanted, but now there are suggestions Liverpool want to take him on board.

Virgil van Dijk and Jarell Quansah started at centre-back at Portman Road, but the academy product was hooked at half-time for tactical reasons for Ibrahima Konaté.

Slot’s call to sub off Quansah was dubbed ‘brutal’, with the 21-year-old enjoying a breakthrough campaign at Anfield last season.

But could some competition be headed his way in the shock form of Branthwaite from the other side of the city?

That was put forward to Liverpool icon Phil Thompson and he stated that the Everton star is ‘one hell of a player’.

The former centre-back admitted that he thought Branthwaite was ‘going to Manchester United’ and feels he would be ‘terrific’ at Anfield, as he told talkSPORT.

“I was looking at Jarrad Branthwaite and I think he is one hell of a player,” admitted Thompson. “I was worried that he was going to Manchester United, I thought what a signing he would be.

“He is one of the best centre-backs, left-footed and I think he would be terrific. It’s one where somebody is having a little bit of mischief there? Listen, Joe Gomez didn’t make the squad (against Ipswich), so if Joe Gomez was to move, that would open up another position at centre-back.”

Joe Gomez’s future at Liverpool

Sources have told HITC that Aston Villa and Newcastle are ready to pounce for Gomez after he is casted out by Slot.

If the Englishman heads for the exit door, then you suspect another centre-back will be signed, even if the Reds are yet to spend a penny this summer.

That’s where Branthwaite comes into the picture and he would prove to be one hell of a signing if that happens.

A ball-playing centre-half and a left-footed player. This is someone who Slot could develop into a top, top player and a starting England international.
