Leeds United have been busy in the summer transfer window, but not in the manner in which they would have liked.

There is huge pressure on Daniel Farke amid their very poor start to the new season because nothing but promotion is going to be accepted.

Tottenham Hotspur signed Archie Gray at the start of the window and then Crysencio Summerville joined West Ham United.

Now, there is talk that Leeds United could lose Georginio Rutter to Brighton and Hove Albion, with that transfer news breaking moments after the team were well beaten in the EFL Cup by Middlesbrough last week.

Leeds signed Rutter for big money during the January transfer window of 2023 when they were in the Premier League and Jesse Marsch was in charge.

But Leeds sacked the American soon after and their new recruit hardly played as the club suffered relegation.

Since then, Clinton Morrison has admitted that Rutter has been ‘outstanding’ in England’s second tier for the Yorkshire giants.

Leeds were beaten by Southampton in the Championship play-off final last season, with Rutter supplying 15 assists during the regular campaign and playing in that now-forgettable Wembley game.

Brighton have a strong record when it comes to transfers over the years and it’s a key reason why they were in Europe last term.

But Morrison has doubted if Rutter is good enough to make the step up to the Premier League and he highlighted his last spell in England’s top-flight, as he told Sky Sports News (17/08/24 at 1:45 pm).

It’s not what Rutter will want to hear because, one thing is for sure, he is now too good to be playing in the Championship.

Georginio Rutter in the Premier League

“He’s a good player, I don’t know if he’s Premier League ready,” said Morrison. “When they were in the Premier League, he hardly played Rutter. They signed him in the Premier League and he didn’t get a lot of minutes.

“He was outstanding in the Championship. He’s not a natural goalscorer. But what he does do is assist. He plays into pockets. He will probably play in that number ten role. I don’t think he is an out-and-out number nine.

“You are going to ask me if he is better than Joao Pedro and Danny Welbeck as a number nine. I don’t think he is better than them as a number nine. He could be, he definitely could be and has the potential to do so.”

Leeds United’s summer transfer window

There is huge pressure on Farke and the fans will well and truly turn on him if the club’s form doesn’t change.

Leeds have been tipped to appoint David Moyes if Farke leaves, with no significant signings yet to be made, which is further infuriating the fans.

The Elland Road faithful understood and accepted they would lose one major player.

But for them to be in a position to lose three and not have any replacements in when the window slams shut at the end of the month is very worrying indeed.
