James Maddison should have the bit between his teeth at Tottenham.

The 27-year-old has made a positive start to the new Premier League season and, according to Roy Keane, ‘the next few months are big for him’.

Tottenham were beaten at Newcastle on Sunday and now they head into the international break deflated because they continue to miss big chances.

Maddison was left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad in the summer and he would have been hoping to make this first squad of the new season.

Gareth Southgate left his England role and now Lee Carsley is in interim charge, but he had decided against picking the Tottenham man.

That doesn’t help Maddison’s cause because there is a lot of competition for those midfield places and his form needs to pick up.

Last summer, he made a £40 million transfer from then-relegated Leicester City to the London club. His arrival excited a lot of fans.

The quick-thinking playmaker made an outstanding start, even though Harry Kane left Tottenham, with the team sitting top of the table after ten matches.

But injury hit, Maddison returned off colour, he was dropped for a period by Ange Postecoglou and that then affected his England chances.

Roy Keane says he still has his ‘question marks’ over Maddison and he would like the player to show a bit of ‘personality’ out on the pitch, as he told Sky Sports Football (01/09/24 at 1:00 pm).

James Maddison’s Tottenham performances

“I have still got my question marks over Maddison, particularly, away from home,” said Keane.

“There are always question marks over him. He has had a couple of disappointments in the last few months with England. But if you give him time and space. If Son is making runs in behind – that’s up to Spurs to get some decent possession and use his intelligence.

“All he needs is one or two opportunities to get on it – I still think there is more to come from Maddison. That’s where he needs to show his personality. He has had his disappointments, every player in their careers will have setbacks. It’s how he deals with it. The next few months are going to be big for him.”

North London derby

Arsenal visit Tottenham after the international break and this is a great chance for Maddison to light up the big stage.

If he can perform against Mikel Arteta’s side and fire his team to a win, then it will be huge for his confidence and reputation.

Postecoglou lost numerous big games last season – Chelsea home and away. West Ham at home. Fulham away. And Arsenal at home.

The Spurs boss can’t continue to lose these London derbies or else, fans will start to vent their frustration and anger pretty soon.
