» » » 'Not being disrespectful': Ian Wright says £20m duo are better than Tottenham's Brennan Johnson

Brennan Johnson is having a very tough time in the colours of Tottenham Hotspur.

Ange Postecoglou is a big believer in the winger, but his performances aren’t matching and, as a result, he is coming under fire from fans.

Tottenham were beaten by Arsenal in the north London derby on Sunday, with Johnson‘s performance leaving a little to be desired.

The 23-year-old has started three out of four of Tottenham‘s games this season and he is yet to score or assist for his team.

Dominic Solanke is the new striker in town, but if he carries on getting served the way he is, then he won’t be scoring many goals this season.

Johnson isn’t the only problem here, but he is part of the problem and the one in the current firing line, with his price tag not helping matters.

Spurs paid Nottingham Forest close to £50 million for Johnson last summer, but he isn’t producing what is expected of him, with his lack of product in the final third a huge issue.

Whilst Ian Wright was not trying to be disrespectful to the player, he thinks Nottingham Forest – the club he left – have already replaced him, and that with better players.

The Midlands giants paid Chelsea £5 million for Callum Hudson-Odoi and then £15 million to Manchester United for Anthony Elanga.

They played a key role in Forest beating Liverpool at Anfield at the weekend, with the duo coming off the bench and combining for a stunning Hudson-Odoi goal.

Wright thinks those two players are ‘better than what Johnson can produce’ and they paid half the price for two of them, as he told Premier League Productions (16/09/24 at 1:35 pm).

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Anthony Elanga v Brennan Johnson

“When you look at the business of selling Brennan Johnson for £55 million and getting them two (Elanga and Hudson-Odoi) for £21 million (£20m*), two players,” said Wright.

“I am being honest and I am not going to be disrespectful to Brennan Johnson. They are both better than him in what they can produce.

“Now, they may have the opportunity, especially Callum Hudson-Odoi, to really show what he was capable of. A few years back, you wouldn’t have been able to get him for that kind of money. But you can see what he is capable of.  Elanga’s pace and Callum Hudson-Odoi’s capabilities as well.”

Tottenham’s next set of fixtures

Spurs travel to the Midlands to take on Championship side Coventry City in a tricky League Cup encounter on Wednesday night.

Then Brentford visit north London, with Spurs needing to inject some much-needed confidence into the team because it is seeping away.

To put it simply, if they lose to Coventry, then the frustration and anger will really grow, and not just towards the players.

A lot has been made about Postecoglou’s style, but he has to knock the door down eventually, or he will get knocked down himself.
