Tennis has gone through a number of changes over the past few years, and few have sparked more debate than the rule about coaching during live matches – a shift that Brad Gilbert says was badly needed.
Gilbert, who coached Coco Gauff to her breakout Grand Slam title at the 2023 US Open, has seen first-hand how the landscape has evolved.
Now speaking to Caroline Garcia on the Tennis Insider podcast, the former world number four explained how the change has stopped what he describes as quiet cheating.
Brad Gilbert says rule change helped prevent cheating
Before 2020, coaching from a player’s box during matches was technically banned, though most in the sport knew it happened regularly, often slipping under the radar if coaches spoke in foreign languages or relied on subtle signals.
Gilbert said the new rules, which now allow coaches to issue limited verbal or hand-signal advice during play, have cleaned up the grey areas, even if they introduce new challenges.
“First of all I am glad that it is allowed because it has stopped the cheating,” Gilbert said. “There was lots of cheating and maybe if you were doing it in a different language you might get away with it.
“But there’s a balance. Now I feel like it’s a little bit too much. When you have these tablets [iPads]… When I am watching a match I never look at the tablet. I am still looking with my own eyes and trying to process what they are doing.”
Gilbert also noted the downside – that some players have come to rely too much on outside input. “Sometimes players look at the coach after every single thing. They want to know where to serve, and it becomes too much.”
The pushback is building too. Taylor Fritz once called the move “awful” for the sport, while Denis Shapovalov argued coaching undermines tennis’s unique tradition that demands players problem-solve on their own.

Gilbert isn’t alone in noticing the shift. Some players have spoken out against the measure, arguing that tennis’s root appeal lies in the individual’s ability to adapt without help.

In October, Shapovalov posted on X: “Not just as a tennis player but as a fan of this sport it’s sad to see this new off court coaching rule. Tennis is special because you are out there alone. Why are you trying to change the beauty of this game.”
But the trend shows no signs of reversing, with tournaments such as Wimbledon and the US Open now firmly on board with in-match coaching. For better or worse, it looks like tennis is settling into its new era – one where the lines between player and coach are just a little less rigid than before.

It was a huge weekend for Bryson DeChambeau’s Crushers at LIV Golf Dallas.
Bryson only just squeezed into the top 10 in the individual tournament, but his team were comfortable winners of the team event.
The Crushers finished 18 under par, with the 4Aces in second place at just 7 under par. But having now won three LIV Golf tournaments in a row, DeChambeau still thinks there is more to come from one of his teammates.
The golfer from Modesto, California, tipped his teammate Paul Casey to soon claim victory in his first LIV event after he was near the top against Patrick Reed, Jinichiro Kozuma and Louis Oosthuizen.

“We just played stellar golf today. To three-peat here in Dallas, in my hometown, is fantastic. The people showed up, they showed out, and what a great atmosphere. This is what LIV Golf is all about. Man, I’m super pumped for more to come,” he explained.
“We all finished pretty much top ten. I think 11th for Baan, but it’s close enough. I played great today, too. Our whole team played great.
“Unfortunately, Paul didn’t get the job done. He was right there again. His time is coming. He’s playing some great golf, and I love every one of them.”

The numbers paint a telling picture. United controlled most of the match but conceded to the only shot Tottenham had on target – which came from a moment of bad luck.

Golden State Warriors

Los Angeles Lakers

Porzingis’ skill set fits what the Lakers need – a big who can shoot from deep, block shots, and play off their two stars.
A trade could be built around Rui Hachimura, and future pick swaps, giving the Celtics financial relief and future assets in return.
Utah Jazz
Utah was linked to Porzingis before he signed with Boston, reportedly offering more money had he opted out of his previous deal. Now, with Austin Ainge taking over as team president, there’s a direct line to the Celtics front office that could help facilitate discussions.
The Jazz are building around Lauri Markkanen and could use another frontcourt piece to round out their core. Porzingis, when healthy, would form a unique pairing with Markkanen, giving Utah a size and shooting advantage.
To match salaries, Utah could send expiring deals like those of Jordan Clarkson or John Collins, providing flexibility for both teams moving forward.
While health remains a question, Porzingis still offers enough upside for these teams to consider making a move – especially if the price drops closer to the season.

According to a report from L’Equipe, United have made contact with the representatives of Christopher Nkunku.
The 27-year-old forward has struggled to find form and fitness at Chelsea since his £52m move from RB Leipzig in 2023 – a price noted by Sky Sports – and is reportedly open to a fresh start.
Enzo Maresca has overlooked Nkunku in favour of other options, and the board appear ready to move on from a player whose time in blue has featured more setbacks than highlights.
The report states that while Mbeumo remains the primary focus, Nkunku has become a subject of genuine interest inside Old Trafford – not just in the technical team, but among top decision-makers.
It’s worth noting that there is no offer yet, and Nkunku’s name may also be surfacing to apply pressure on Brentford during ongoing talks for Mbeumo.

One aspect of the report that newer fans may not recall: Amorim had pushed to sign Nkunku during his time at Sporting CP before Chelsea moved in. That existing admiration could be a factor.
Chelsea have since added Liam Delap to their front line, and there is now a willingness inside Stamford Bridge to let Nkunku leave if a suitable bid arrives this summer.
Regardless, the market is moving quickly – and United don’t want to be late to the table if Nkunku’s situation resolves fast.
Nkunku doesn’t feel like a direct fit for what United need
United were linked with Nkunku in January, but nothing materialised. It felt like a move of opportunity rather than necessity back then, and that hasn’t fully changed.
The profiles of other linked forwards – like Viktor Gyokeres, who is direct and athletic, or Hugo Ekitike, who brings unpredictability and pace – seem to fit Amorim’s tactical shifts more naturally.
Nkunku, candidly, hasn’t played as a line-leading striker since his RB Leipzig days. His defensive work rate has also declined, which is noticeable when comparing that era to now.
He would make more sense playing behind the main striker, which raises questions about why the club is still so invested in pursuing Bryan Mbeumo.
The links to Nkunku may suit United as a bargaining tool. Making Brentford feel there are alternatives could help them seal the move they truly want.
While Nkunku still carries quality when fit, these links make more sense as backup planning than as headline ambition.

Alcaraz, who is still only 22 years old, is far from finishing his career and has plenty left to achieve in the coming years.

Alcaraz has now become one of the best grass-court players ever despite not spending as long on the surface, compared to clay or hard courts.
This is largely because grass was rarely featured on the calendar until more matches were added in recent years
However, despite winning the majority of his 21 career titles on clay, Alcaraz’s highest win percentage is, in fact, on grass.

“But it’s amazing. We’ll mess with something, and if it works on the range, you try it one day, it works, you just let it go. And one day you might catch fire. If he doesn’t like it, I’m sure he’ll change back next week. We’re always tweaking. Doesn’t matter what level you’re at.”
Golfers who never wore gloves on the PGA Tour
Morikawa isn’t breaking completely new ground, though. Lucas Glover currently plays without a glove, and some notable names from earlier generations did the same.
Fred Couples may be the most famous example, but Hall of Famer Ben Hogan and the legendary ball striker Moe Norman also skipped the glove entirely.
Others, like Corey Pavin and Lee Janzen, are part of that club as well. It’s rare, but clearly not impossible to find success that way.

Ngannou, who hasn’t fought in the UFC since defending his title in 2022, before leaving over contract disputes, responded swiftly to White’s comments.
Taking to social media, he wrote simply: “Did I say I’m ever coming back?”
In another reply to a fan urging him to reclaim his title, Ngannou fired back: “I don’t remember losing it, mate. It’s still in my closet.”

Toby Collyer is determined to build on his promising rise at Manchester United as he prepares for the 2025/26 season.
Even in a turbulent year where United finished 15th in the Premier League, Collyer’s emergence offered supporters a bright spot. Promoted to the senior team in 2024, the midfielder worked under both Erik ten Hag and Ruben Amorim, despite missing time due to injury.

“Look, when it comes down to it, our hands are what makes us such good athletes and such good golfers is that we have so much feel. For some reason, when I’ve taken the glove off this week, it’s kind of worked. It’s just – problem is it’s really hot and it’s sweaty.
“But honestly, I started seeing shots that I was hitting, and even the bad ones were not good, but like that’s kind of where I expect them to be. It was just a back-and-forth kind of thing.“
Scheffler was asked about Morikawa’s approach, and didn’t hesitate to rule it out for himself.
He said: “I’ve tried to hit without my glove and I’m not any good at it. You definitely won’t see me doing that. I’ve got sweaty hands so that ain’t going to work.“

The ‘no glove’ approach is rare in the modern game, but there are a few names throughout history who stand out.

Eddie Hall proved how much an advantage size can be after the 350lb beast tossed around 28-fight veteran Mariusz Pudzianowski and won his MMA debut inside 30 seconds back in April.

Interim UFC heavyweight champion Tom Aspinall helped Hall get ready for his MMA debut.
Footage of the pair sparring together went viral ahead of The Beast’s fight at KSW 105 in Poznan, Poland.
And that makes Aspinall an ideal figure to weigh in on a potential fight between Johnson and Hall.
The question came from The Overdogs Podcast, where a producer asked: “How many ‘Mighty Mouse’ would it take to beat Eddie Hall?”
Aspinall replied: “In all honesty, if you had an MMA fight, I think you’d beat him.”

What’s next for Eddie Hall?
They will run it back, but Hall has already made it clear Pudzianowski isn’t the rematch he wants.
He’s already been linked with a number of big names in the sport, with Conor McGregor, Dillon Danis and Francis Ngannou among them.
But Hall also sent a stomping warning directly to Tyson Fury and Jake Paul after his win, so there’s no telling where things go from here.

Brandel Chamblee says that he would suspend Wyndham Clark as a commissioner
Social media posts after Oakmont surfaced showing several damaged lockers, and it wasn’t long before fingers pointed toward Clark.
When asked about the incident on The Favourite Chamblee, Brandel Chamblee didn’t hold back, saying the 2023 US Open winner should face serious consequences.
“I saw the pictures online. He’s not the first tour pro that’s had a temper tantrum in the locker room. I’ve witnessed one myself, which I’ve told a few times. I’m not going to throw the person under the bus, but he came in and opened his locker door hard and the door came off the hinges. He was close to me because his last name was close to mine alphabetically, and he had just blown it and lost on the last hole, made a big number and lost.
“The fella then, he was an older, known to be comically surly, player, and you typically walk out of the locker room and you always give them $100 or a couple hundred dollars for the attendant. ‘Thanks for everything you did this week’. And he just walked up and he pulled his chequebook out and he was like, ‘I’m going to write you a cheque for that locker. However much you tell me it is I’m going to double it and I apologise’. He did the wrong thing, but he did the right thing. I never forgot that,” he said.
“So when I saw the pictures of what Wyndham did, I thought wow, it was far worse than what I had witnessed, and it wasn’t one locker, it looked like three lockers. It was reprehensible for sure. You’re a guest in these clubs. You’re there for one week, and you’re a guest, you’re meant to behave like a guest.
“We live in an era where there are so many concessions being made to tour pros, and everybody sides with the tour pros on almost every single issue. It’s like they can do no wrong. But when they do wrong, they should be called out for it and fined for it. Hopefully, he’s going to face a significant fine. If I were the commissioner, I’d probably suspend him for a significant period of time to send a message to everybody else. That’s not how you behave. It’s not often you see somebody act like that. I’m not going to let that overshadow an otherwise wonderful Sunday. But it was certainly regrettable.”
How Wyndham Clark responded to the photos from the US Open
Clark was asked about the photos following his opening round at Travelers Championship on Thursday. He produced a superb 64 as he looks to turn his season around.
Speaking after the event, Clark acknowledged the incident, expressing regret for his actions.
“I’ve had a lot of highs and lows in my career, especially this year some lows. I made a mistake that I deeply regret. I’m very sorry for what happened,” Clark said.
“But I’d also like to move on, not only for myself but for Oakmont, for the USGA, and kind of focus on the rest of this year and things that come up. I still want to try to make the Ryder Cup team. I still am on the outside looking in for the FedExCup. So I’m starting to move on and focus on those things.”
This wasn’t Clark’s first major moment of frustration this season. During the PGA Championship, he threw his driver in anger, which led him to make a public apology later.
Clark became an easy target for critics after the photos went viral. However, this kind of situation also shows how professional players are subjected to various forms of pressure that the public cannot always understand.
Even so, Chamblee’s argument that action is needed isn’t without merit, especially given the pattern of behaviour this season.
