The Rhys Montrose revelation in You season 4
Throughout season 4 of You, we’re led to believe that Joe has a new rival in the form of London mayoral candidate Rhys Montrose who apparently has a secretive murderous side and wants to chip away at the rich and powerful one brutal killing after another.
However, as the season progresses, it becomes clear that not everything is as it seems with Rhys with episode 7 offering a mind-bending revelation that leads to Joe questioning his entire existence.
Joe travels to Rhys’s home in the countryside and is surprised when the would-be politician doesn’t recognize him and has no knowledge of who he is.
Initially, Joe believes that Montrose is lying but after inadvertently killing Rhys in a fit of rage, the truth becomes clear.
The Rhys that Joe had been interacting with all season had actually been a figment of his own imagination and the deeds of the Eat The Rich killer were actually carried out by Joe all along.
Joe revealed to be suffering from erotomania
Following the revelation about Rhys Montrose being inside Joe’s head, we learn that Joe has a condition called erotomania.
Erotomania is a mental health disorder where a person believes that someone is secretly in love with them when they’re not.
In Joe’s case, he had researched Rhys Montrose thoroughly and eventually began to believe that he and Montrose had a real-life relationship when that was far from the truth.
However, the fact that Rhys Montrose seemed to be the embodiment of Joe’s darker side seems to point to another issue altogether.
Does Joe Goldberg have a split personality in You season 4?
Yes, Joe Goldberg does develop a split personality during You season 4.
In episode 8, we learn that Joe had actually kidnapped his season 3 lover Marienne when we had initially been told that he let her go.
By kidnapping and harming someone he obsesses over so much, Joe suffered a psychotic break that led to him developing a split personality to compartmentalize his actions.
One personality takes on the guise of university professor Jonathan Moore while the other becomes a would-be politician who moonlights as a serial killer that targets the rich and powerful.
The symptoms that Joe displays make dissociative identity disorder (DID) the most likely condition he is suffering from as it typically appears in a person as a way of coping with trauma, like that he’s inflicted upon Marienne and the countless murder victims he’s killed.
This, coupled with the erotomania he’s been dealing with, manifests itself in Joe’s second personality taking on the form of Rhys Montrose.
Part 2 of You season 4 is available to stream now on Netflix after releasing on March 9, 2023.
