Djed Spence has struggled at Rennes since joining the French side on loan from Tottenham and it did not get any better on Saturday as he was hooked at half-time – criticised by French media outlet Maxi Foot, earning a 3/10 rating.

Spence, 22, joined Rennes on loan in the January window from Spurs after just six substitute outings for the North London side. It saw him team up with Joe Rodon. But the right-back has failed to show Spurs what he is capable of.

The England U21 man has been guilty of many poor displays at Rennes. In the first leg of a Europa League knockout clash against Shakhtar, his display was described as “catastrophic”. Not much better against Clermont, “a shambles”.

In what was his eighth outing for Rennes since joining on loan, Spence started against Auxerre. The game ended in a 0-0 draw, with Rennes missing the chance to win a match they should have won. Spence was taken off at half-time.

French outlet Maxi Foot compiled a player ratings piece. Similarly to prior reports, Spence’s display was described as “catastrophic”, and earned 3/10 as he exited the match early. Auxerre sit in a lowly 17th place, in the relegation zone.

“Catastrophic evening for the right-back. Faced with high pressing, the Englishman was poor in his lane and gave away the ball for the huge opportunity for Hein. Regularly overwhelmed and replaced in the 46th minute,” Maxi Foot report.

It is simply not working for Spence. There have been glimpses, but this loan spell at Rennes was supposed to give him the platform to show Antonio Conte and Spurs why he should have been given more game time. But, the opposite.

Instead, it is proving to Conte and to onlooking Spurs fans that their Italian gaffer was right. Spence is not performing adequately and ultimately, he is going to return to North London this summer with his confidence completely shot.
