Liverpool are said to be interested in bringing Conor Gallagher to Anfield this summer as Jürgen Klopp aims to revamp his midfield department.

It was the Independent who claimed that the German has made the England international a key target amid talk of Chelsea needing to sell players, in order to comply with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Gallagher had a chance to show Klopp what he can do on Tuesday night as Liverpool took on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge – let’s take a look at how he performed…

How Conor Gallagher performed against Liverpool

Well, the Chelsea No.23 was only given 21 minutes of action against the Reds after Bruno Saltor opted to start him on the bench.

Gallagher was introduced in the 69th minute with the scoreline nicely poised at 0-0 for him to make an impact.

Unfortunately, the 23-year-old failed to put his stamp on the game.

As WhoScored shows, Gallagher failed to record a single shot, key pass or dribble in his 21 minutes on the pitch, nor did he win a freekick for the Blues, which suggests he didn’t really trouble Liverpool in dangerous areas whatsoever.

The Cobham academy graduate’s industrial side – a trademark of his game – also wasn’t on show in west London on Tuesday, as he failed to make a tackle or interception in his cameo against Liverpool.

Of course, 21 minutes is not a huge amount of time to make an impact against a side as accomplished as Klopp’s men, but Bruno Saltor surely expected more from his No.23 after throwing him on in the 69th minute.

Conor Gallagher would thrive at Liverpool

While Klopp probably wasn’t too impressed by Gallagher on Tuesday, that display should not define him – it was a tricky night which lacked planning following the departure of Graham Potter on Monday.

What Gallagher can do when given a clear role to play in the side is hugely effective, as we saw at Crystal Palace last season when Patrick Vieira used him almost in a No.10 role while asking him to press high.

The Epsom-born midfielder scored eight goals and provided five assists on loan in south London last term, winning Crystal Palace’s Player of the Season award.

In a similarly intense system under Klopp with a focus on gegenpressing, we believe the energetic Gallagher would thrive.

There is certainly a space for him to showcase his skills, as Liverpool prepare to say goodbye to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Naby Keita when their contracts expire this summer.

Be sure to keep an eye on the situation, as Chelsea may need to sell Gallagher to Liverpool in order to balance their books.
