Reports suggesting that Vincent Kompany could take over at Tottenham Hotspur should be a concern to Bart Verbruggen if the youngster plans to join Burnley during the summer transfer window.
So says Franck Boeckx, the former Anderlecht shot-stopper in conversation with Het Nieuwsblad.
Verbruggen has only been RCSA’s number one for a matter of months, replacing the vastly experienced Hendrick van Crombrugge shortly after the Qatar World Cup. But his outstanding performances – particularly against Ludogorets and Villarreal in Europe – mean the suitors are circling like piranhas ahead of the summer transfer window.
Liverpool and Manchester United are reportedly keen on the penalty-saving specialist. According to The Sun, meanwhile, Premier League-bound Burnley are renewing their interest after their pursuit of Verbruggen ended in disappointment eight months ago.
Burnley would have to part with £15 million. Around £10 million more than they were expected to pay back in 2022.

But, with Kompany attracting more and more admiring glances on the back of an outstanding debut season at Turf Moor, Boeckx believes Verbruggen should not rush into a move until Burnley confirm what the future holds for their much-coveted gaffer.
“Bart Verbruggen can become one of the best goalkeepers in the world,” Boeckx insists. “I begged on my bare knees last summer (for Anderlecht) not to sell him.”
“I would never sign for a (specific) coach at a club. Who says that Kompany will not go to Tottenham soon?
“I myself once stayed at AA Gent for coach Victor Fernandez. Three months later, Fernandez was gone and I was in the B-team!
“Verbruggen will of course decide on his own future. But, in my opinion, he should stay at Anderlecht for another year.”
‘One of the best in Europe’
Verbruggen, Boeckx adds, should take a leaf out of Maarten Vandervoort’s book. Fellow shot-stopper Vandervaart agreed a move RB Leipzig last year but will not move to Germany until 2022, allowing the youngster to continue developing at KRC Genk.
“For me, Verbruggen has the potential to become one of the best goalkeepers in Europe.”
That is according to Jan Vertonghen; Anderlecht team-mate and former Tottenham Hotspur centre-back.
“We are also very close. We are practically neighbours in Antwerp. I have rarely seen such a personality at that age; Modest, but very driven and ambitious. If I’m a top European club and I have the money to spend, I wouldn’t hesitate (to buy him).”
