What is Freaknik?

Freaknik is an annual festival based in Atlanta, Georgia. It normally takes place during spring break and it primarily focuses on R&B and Hip Hop artists.

First started in 1983 in a public park near the Atlanta University Center, what began as a small picnic for students who couldn’t afford to return home for spring break eventually spiraled into a full-blown music festival.

The name of the festival, which was originally Freaknic, is a combination of the words “freak” and “picnic”.

From 1983 until 1999 the event consistently grew in size and popularity. With the addition of concerts, dance concerts, rap sessions, film festivals, and job fairs, Freaknik became a community.

In 1999 the festival was shut down. Ceasing to exist, the Freaknik celebration terminated until 2019 when a revamped version returned for just one day. As of 2020, the festival was reworked into a 3-day event focusing on the artists performing.

Hulu documentary to focus on Freaknik 1994

The documentary titled Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never Told promises to shed light on the festival, showcasing untold moments and stories from the notorious time.

On the official festival’s Instagram account, Freaknik Fest shared a video providing more insight and hype for the upcoming Hulu documentary.

The video features commentary from a former Freaknik 1994 attendee, who jokingly proclaims “We might be in trouble” when referencing Hulu’s alleged dedication to capturing the truth of what really happened during the 94 festival.

The woman in the video concludes her message with “They about to put our business out in the street” whilst laughing. Clearly, the documentary is already causing a stir, even though no trailer has been released yet.

There is no confirmed release date for Freaknik: The Wildest Party Never, although it is expected to release sometime in 2024.
