Leeds United have been ordered to pay £24.5million to former striker Jean-Kevin Augustin, but who does he even play for these days?

The Athletic’s David Ornstein reports that FIFA have found Leeds guilty of breaching Augustin’s contract at Elland Road.

That means Leeds must now pay Augustin £24.5million on top of forking out £15.5million to his former club RB Leipzig.

That’s a staggering total of £40million, with Leeds already appealing against FIFA’s latest ruling.

What happened to Jean-Kevin Augustin at Leeds United?

Leeds thought they had hit the jackpot in the January of 2020.

The Whites struck a deal to take striker Augustin on loan from RB Leipzig with a permanent deal set up if Leeds won promotion.

Augustin was considered to be a quality young striker and one far too good for the Championship at the time.

The season was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic but Leeds did go up – with little input from their French striker.

Augustin managed just 49 minutes across three substitute appearances for Leeds and never made the grade under Marcelo Bielsa.

The former Paris Saint-Germain and Monaco attacker wasn’t wanted at Elland Road, but Leeds – at least in the minds of RB Leipzig – had committed to an £18million permanent deal.

Then-Leipzig sporting director Markus Krosche told RB Live that he couldn’t understand why Leeds thought they could just refuse to pay up.

Leeds argued that the COVID-19 pandemic pushed the end of the season back and therefore a permanent deal was no longer valid on June 30th, with the Championship season still ongoing.

Whilst they settled the situation with RB Leipzig at a £15.5million cost, Leeds haven’t sorted out things on Augustin’s end.

The Athletic note that Augustin had agreed a five-year deal worth €90,000-a-week (£79,000-a-week).

Yet with Leeds reneging on their deal, Augustin was left without that contract and is now due huge compensation after Sunday’s ruling.

Who does Augustin play for now?

Augustin was considered to be an exciting talent and hit 20 goals in 67 games for RB Leipzig.

The move to Leeds didn’t work out and the fallout from this transfer saga meant that Augustin became a free agent with both RB Leipzig and Leeds relinquishing any claims to his registration.

Nantes signed Augustin in 2020 but he managed just 11 appearances there, failing to register a goal or an assist.

Augustin was suffering from long COVID at one point with Nantes and left the club last summer.

Augustin is now playing Basel over in Switzerland, desperately seeking to get his career back on track after three years of chaos.

The 25-year-old has managed four goals and one assist in 18 games this season.

Augustin will hope to kick on after FIFA’s ruling – though Leeds’ appeal means this saga will drag on a little longer yet.
