Ian Wright says Oliver Skipp was ‘fortunate’ that he didn’t get punished for his possible ankle-breaking challenge on Luis Diaz during Tottenham’s 4-3 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday.

There has been a lot of talk about Diogo Jota’s high boot to the face of Oliver Skipp, well the Tottenham midfielder’s tackle on Luis Diaz before that was a red card offence.

On both occasions, the on-field referee Paul Tierney didn’t send anyone off, but Wright made it clear that Skipp ‘got it wrong’ when he went in to try and win the ball off the Liverpool winger, who has just come back from a long-term injury.

Ryan Mason was annoyed at the decision to not send Jota off, who only got a yellow card for his studs-up challenge to Skipp’s face, as he went on to score the winner.

But many are making the point that Tottenham’s £40k-a-week midfielder (Spotrac) shouldn’t have been on the field of play in the first place.

Those thoughts were echoed by Wright, who understands that Skipp didn’t have bad intentions in his challenge, but he should have been punished, as he told Premier League Productions (01/05/23 at 2:15 pm).

“I thought, again, he was very fortunate,” said Wright. “He has gone over and onto Luis Diaz’s ankle. I know Oliver Skipp’s intention isn’t to break his leg. He is trying to go and challenge.

“But, unfortunately for him, he has got it wrong. His toe has touched the ball because he has just about touched the ball. He could have easily broken it, so that’s dangerous.”

EVERYONE ANNOYED

From Klopp to Mason, everyone had the right to be annoyed at the weekend.

It was an all-time Premier League classic, especially given how the game ended, with Jota producing his own Stan Collymore moment which will now be remembered for years to come.

But Skipp shouldn’t have been given his marching order, and if he was, then that whole Jota situation wouldn’t have happened.
