Ian Wright thinks Mikel Arteta was a little bit ‘unfair’ to drop Rob Holding for Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Chelsea on Tuesday night at the Emirates.
The 27-year-old, just like the rest of his Arsenal teammates, has had a few games to forget.
From the penalty Rob Holding gave away at Anfield to his troubles facing Erling Haaland.
Given that he is a back-up and he was brought in to replace the injured William Saliba in recent weeks, then there was always going to be pressure on the Englishman.
But, for Arsenal’s London clash against Chelsea, a number of changes were made by Arteta, from Thomas Partey being benched to January signing, Jakub Kiwior, coming in for his first start.
Given the talk around Holding of late and then Arteta’s call to drop him, Wright wasn’t exactly happy with that decision, although, he was pleased to see Kiwior handed a start, as he told Premier League Productions (02/05/23 at 7:10 pm).
“I think he has been a bit unfair on Rob Holding,” said Wright. “He is somebody who hasn’t had a lot of minutes. He was someone who came in to replace William Saliba – and he is fantastic.
“Yes, in certain instances, Rob has been done for pace. We have seen him isolated and it has caused a bit of a problem.
“I think it has been unfair some of the stick he has got. But seeing Kiwior coming in. He has been there long enough to see what’s going on and to see what we are capable of.
“I think it’s good to bring him in. These are the games you want to see him in.”
KIWIOR IMPRESSES
When Saliba was injured, it was suggested that Arteta should have actually started with Kiwior, but he didn’t want to because he didn’t trust the player.
Well, given the rocky performances Holding has put in, then some may question whether the Polish star should have been played earlier.
Either way, the early signs are very positive with Kiwior.
