In the wake of the news that Colin Allred will be contesting Ted Cruz’s seat in the Senate, we’re revisiting the time that the former NFL player and his wife, Aly Eber, made Congress history.
Outspoken Republican politician Ted Cruz has been a Texas senator for a decade now, but he’ll face Democratic competition in the 2024 elections in the form of an ex-football star. Colin Allred, who entered Congress in 2018, has claimed that Cruz “only cares about himself” and that Texas is “embarrassed” by its current senator.
Allred’s run at the Senate is the most high-profile moment of his political career to date, though in 2021 he and his wife Alexandra Eber made the headlines for a rather different reason.

Having been elected in 2018, Allred took his seat in Congress’ 32nd Texan district in early January 2019, though just one month later, the former NFL man announced he would be taking some time off.
The reason for Allred’s leave of absence was the fact that he and his wife, Eber, were expecting their first child and the recently appointed Congressman was officially taking paternity leave to spend time with his firstborn.
The historical aspect of the story is down to the fact that, remarkably, he was the first member of Congress to ever officially take up paternity leave. Allred did it again in March 2021, this time for a longer period of a month, as the couple welcomed child number two.
Speaking in an interview around the time of his second spell of maternity leave, Allred said that “It’s overwhelmingly beneficial to have some time for men to be with their children.”
Who is Colin Allred’s wife, Alexandra ‘Aly’ Eber?
Allred and Eber’s combined CV would make for quite the read, as the Texans are something of a power couple.
Eber is an Associate at the multinational law firm Cooley LLP, where she specializes in commercial law, and represents corporations, financial institutions and individuals in New York, the Columbia District and Texas.
Eber graduated magna cum laude from Occidental College, Los Angeles, in 2011, before attending Berkeley School of Law, where she graduated in 2014.
Allred and Eber have two sons, firstborn Jordan and second child Cameron, and the pair recently celebrated their sixth wedding anniversary on March 25, 2023.
