Liverpool are stepping up their pursuit of a third midfielder and have added another option from the Premier League to their already long list of targets.

According to The Athletic, Crystal Palace midfielder, Cheick Doucoure has emerged as a surprising target for Liverpool as they continue their search for a midfielder with Southampton’s Romeo Lavia also on the list of targets for Jurgen Klopp’s men according to the same report.

The Mali midfielder has impressed since his £26 million move from Lens last summer and could be available if Palace’s price tag for the 23-year-old is met.

The report states further that Palace would be looking for around £50 million to allow the midfielder to move to Anfield. Whether Liverpool would offer the reported fee for the Palace midfielder after their struggles agreeing a similar fee with Southampton for Lavia, remains to be seen.

The report also states that Palace will look at Southampton’s valuation for Lavia for guidance on their own valuation for Doucoure, with the Championship side valuing the Belgian at £50 million.

Doucoure represents an interesting option for Liverpool

The former Lens midfielder, as previously mentioned, has impressed since his move to London last summer. The midfielder excels at the defensive side of the game, with a high number of interceptions and tackles according to FBREF, Doucoure may well be a good option for Liverpool’s midfield.

Fabinho, according to The Athletic, is edging closer to a move away from Liverpool after Saudi Arabian side Al-Ittihad lodged a £40 million bid for the Brazilian midfielder’s services. With Jordan Henderson potentially moving to the Middle East according to the Daily Mail, too, a move for a third midfielder will be required to fill the gaps left by the pair.

A defensive option in midfield will be required with Lavia, Manchester City’s Kalvin Phillips, and Fiorentina’s Sofyan Amrabat among the options to replace the Brazilian midfielder, with Doucoure now added to that already extensive list of targets.
