The representatives of Harrison Ashby have a clear view on his immediate future with Newcastle United only six months after agreeing to a transfer from West Ham United.
That is according to Chronicle Live, which claims that Ashby’s camp accepts he should leave Newcastle with a loan transfer. Those close to the 21-year-old feel that a move away from St James’ Park over the off-season sales will likely be imperative to guarantee his development.
Ashby joined Newcastle on deadline day in January after the Toon agreed to a £3m transfer with West Ham. The sum included potential add-ons as the right-back was otherwise out of contract in June. He had also informed the Hammers that he would not agree to a new deal.
Howe had high hopes after Ashby’s transfer to Newcastle
Newcastle moved to secure Ashby’s transfer in the winter market as Eddie Howe believed he would be cover for Kieran Trippier. The Toon boss also has high hopes in the defender’s skill. He said after the deal that Ashby is a ‘very talented young player’ and has ‘a lot of potential’.
But Ashby failed to make a single appearance for the Magpies and only made Howe’s bench twice. The Newcastle coach included the Scotland Under-21 gem among his substitutes for the Toon’s final two games. He watched on as Newcastle drew with Leicester and Chelsea.
Instead, Ashby would continue to ply his trade at the U21 level once the Milton Keynes-born talent returned from a hamstring injury. He featured twice in the Toon’s junior team and got one goal plus one assist. He had played twice for West Ham’s first-team before the transfer.
Ashby had enjoyed first-team minutes with West Ham
David Moyes handed Ashby his senior debut in September 2020 and would afford him seven first-team outings in east London. The defender even enjoyed three outings in European ties with two in 2022/23. Yet his switch to Tyneside is yet to see Ashby add to his senior fixtures.
Now, Ashby’s camp accepts he likely needs to agree to a loan transfer to secure the minutes that are not available at Newcastle. Otherwise, the right-back risks letting his development stagnate next season. He only enjoyed 114 minutes in West Ham’s first-team during 22/23.
