Stevie Nicol expressed his ‘surprise’ after being told that Gabriel Jesus is going to face a few weeks on the sidelines for Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal.

The Liverpool legend stated that he ‘didn’t expect’ that, but he is sure Arsenal will cope fine without Gabriel Jesus.

The Premier League title contenders beat AS Monaco in the Emirates Cup on Wednesday, with Eddie Nketiah getting on the scoresheet, as Nicol thinks he could be a player that could fill that striker role, as he told ESPN.

There are other options Arteta could also turn to, such as summer signing Kai Havertz and January capture, Leandro Trossard, who played down the middle on occasions for Brighton.

After the 2022 World Cup, when Jesus was out of action, Nketiah did lead the line, but he got mixed messages about his performances.

Either way, with the new Premier League season around the corner, Nicol doesn’t think Jesus being out for a few weeks is a huge deal.

“Is he?!” responded Nicol after being told about Jesus’ injury. “Surprised me with that. I didn’t expect that.

“Alright, he is out for a couple of weeks. But they have got Trossard. They have got Nketiah, who is scoring goals as well. I think they will be alright. I don’t think it’s a huge deal.”

Should Arsenal buy a striker?

Even when Jesus was fit, many were calling for the club to bring in a bonafide number nine to challenge the £45 million signing from Manchester City (Sky Sports).

In terms of goals, Arsenal, even without that 20+ goal man up top, did very well because of the contributions of Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, to name a few.

But there are some who feel that the club should sign that player capable of hitting 20+ because it would take their game to the next level.
