Alan Shearer says he was ‘happy’ with the decision not to award Manchester United a penalty after a handball by Cristian Romero during Tottenham Hotspur’s 2-0 win on Saturday.

The incident happened in the first half when the scores were 0-0, with Alejandro Garnacho’s shot clearly hitting the arm of Tottenham centre-back, Cristian Romero, it was just a case of whether it was a penalty or not.

Whilst Shearer agreed with the on-field call by Michael Oliver and VAR’s decision not to review it, he did state that ‘the problem’ with all of this is that ‘tomorrow, another referee would see it in a different way and give it handball’, as he told Match of the Day.

That was a big call because it was at a stage of the match when Manchester United were banging the door down.

If Erik ten Hag’s side were awarded the penalty and opened the scoring, then you would imagine that the result would have probably read a lot different and they would have walked away with the three points because they were dominant during that first period.

But despite Man United fans shouting from the rooftops that they were hard done by, Shearer praised the call that was made.

“I am happy with this decision,” said Shearer. “I don’t think there are many people, other than if you are a Man United fan, that want to see that given as handball.

“The problem is the consistency. There is every chance that, if that were to happen in a match tomorrow, another referee would see it in a different way and give it handball.

“The proximity. He is only two yards away. I know his arms are out. But I don’t want to see that given as handball – I thought he got most things right, Michael Oliver.”

Tottenham and Man United’s styles

Ange Postecoglou has been in the Tottenham dugout for a matter of months, added with losing his star striker to Bayern Munich this summer – Dimitar Berbatov has claimed that it’s ‘unfair’.

Yet, Erik ten Hag, who has now been in charge for over a year, his team looked like they had just come together because the styles between the two were a world apart.

Of course, it’s still the very early stages of the new season, as Spurs fans have a smile on their face and those at Old Trafford are asking more questions than providing answers about their team because their opening performances have been worrying.
