Former Premier League striker Chris Sutton has suggested that Jordan Henderson did not want to fight for his place at Liverpool.

Jordan Henderson left Liverpool for Al-Ettifaq during the summer transfer window and has since told The Athletic that because he is now in the latter stage of his career, he does not want to sit on the bench.

The 33-year-old’s comments may have been in reference to the Reds signing Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai, which brought more competition to Anfield, competition Sutton, who has been speaking on It’s All Coming Up, thinks he may not have wanted.

What has Chris Sutton said about Jordan Henderson’s move to

Al-Ettifaq?

In response to Henderson’s interview and switch to the Saudi Pro League, Sutton said: “It’s surprised me a little bit. The type of character I think we’ve all perceived Jordan to be over the years is a real fighter.

“But the stuff he talked about, the conversation with Jurgen Klopp and not feeling valued, I don’t get that. He was still under contract at Liverpool and maybe he just couldn’t stomach the fight for his place up against the likes of Mac Allister and

Szoboszlai.”

Henderson was Liverpool’s captain who led them to the Premier League title, a Champions League trophy and other successes.

However, the Reds are getting on fine without him so far, taking 10 points from their first four top-flight games this season.

It has left them in third place and just two points behind Manchester City, a gap they will try to close after the international break.

Jordan Henderson’s decision to leave Liverpool understandable

However, he is now 33 and may just want to play as much football as possible before his career ends.

With the Euros taking place next year, it is also important that he is playing regularly now, though it remains to be seen if Gareth Southgate will offer a place in the squad to someone who is competing in a division that is not too strong like the Saudi Pro League.

Qualifiers are one thing, but it could be a completely different story when the England manager has to assemble a roster that he thinks can challenge teams such as France and Germany for the European Championship trophy.
