Barry Ferguson says he can understand why Daniel Farke’s Leeds United wanted to sign, Matt O’Riley from Celtic, ahead of a new possible long-term contract at Parkhead, as he told Go Radio.

The 22-year-old has proven to be a shining light for a Celtic team that dominated Scottish football last season and how now started the new campaign in a brilliant fashion.

Following Leeds United’s relegation to the Championship, they were trying their best to fix a squad that saw many players leave on loan, as well as certain players, such as Nadiem Amiri, snub a move to the Championship club, despite being in Yorkshire and primed for a transfer from Bayern Leverkusen.

That’s why, during the latter stages of the 2023 summer transfer window, Leeds were pushing to sign Matt O’Riley, but he stayed put.

Well, it seems as though he is now going to sign a new contract at Parkhead, with three years still running on his current deal.

Former Rangers man Ferguson touched upon those previous Leeds links and how O’Riley has ‘absolutely delighted’ the Celtic supporters, as he told Go Radio

O’Riley’s performances at Celtic

“Again, he was one of these finds that a lot of their fans (Celtic) didn’t know much about,” said Ferguson. “He came from League One. He certainly impressed myself. I am sure he has certainly impressed many people in Scotland.

“I can see why Leeds came in. There was a fair bit of interest in him, but I am sure, if he signs a new long-term contract, then the Celtic fans will be absolutely delighted with that.”

Farke will be glad the summer transfer window is shut

From Farke to the Leeds United supporters, they are going to be pretty pleased that the window has slammed shut, even if they didn’t get everyone they wanted.

The main reason was the mess that was left behind from their relegation. From players running out of the door as soon as they were relegated to others trying to force moves by refusing to play.

All of that has been unsettling, but now that the window has slammed shut, it will allow Farke to push the team forward and towards a promotion push because they will be expected to go up.
