Paul Robinson has made it clear ‘I wouldn’t have liked it’ if he was in the situation of Aaron Ramsdale where Arsenal have decided to sign another number one goalkeeper in David Raya.

The former England shot-stopper says he ‘can’t understand’ Mikel Arteta’s actions because he doesn’t feel Aaron Ramsdale has done much wrong.

In fact, Robinson thinks that Ramsdale did well last season and he has proven to be a ‘really important’ player for Arsenal, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

David Raya has come in on an initial loan deal, but given that he was number one at Brentford, he surely hasn’t come in to warm the bench.

Arteta is clearly unhappy at something and there is a part of Ramsdale’s game that he doesn’t like.

Therefore, fans wouldn’t be surprised to hear that, upon returning from the international break, Arteta is now seriously considering dropping Ramsdale for Raya.

Ramsdale v Raya

“We are a different breed as goalkeepers, we are a strange breed,” said Robinson. “There are two ways you look at it.

“I personally wouldn’t have liked it. I liked to be number one. I liked the manager to put his arm around me and know I was going to play every week. Know that, even if I didn’t play well for a couple of games, then I would still get back in the side if he took me out. It affects people differently with their confidence and mentality.

“But there is another side you look at it and go ‘okay, I have got a challenge here. I need to get better’ and you need to be better than the guy who has been brought in to take your shirt. Some will grow and some will shrink.

“I find it hard to understand why Arteta would bring in Raya, with how well Ramsdale did last season, if he wasn’t thinking of directly replacing him. We all know how Arteta wants to play and maybe he sees David Raya better, in terms of playing out from the back. Aaron Ramsdale has been a really important player for them.”

Ramsdale getting a taste of his own medicine

Back in 2021, Arsenal signed Ramsdale from Sheffield United for £30 million (Sky Sports), even though they had an established and well-liked number one in between the sticks in Bernd Leno.

Ironically enough, when Ramsdale first came in, he first sat on the bench, then after the first international break, he got his shot at wearing the number one gloves and he hasn’t looked back since.

Even though Arsenal are in a much better position now than they were back then, it does seem as though Ramsdale is getting a taste of his own medicine here.
