Janusz Michallik has praised Destiny Udogie for the early impact he has had in Tottenham Hotspur colours.

The former USA international says ‘people are now questioning’ why the Tottenham left-back hasn’t been picked for Italy’s senior team, as he told ESPN.

Destiny Udogie was picked to play for the U21s during this current international break, but he has since withdrawn because of illness, as reported by Alasdair Gold on Twitter.

That will be music to the ears of Tottenham fans because he has started every game under Ange Postecoglou this season, and now he can earn a rest during these next few weeks.

The 20-year-old, even at his young age, is starting to become a very important figure for the club after he signed from Udinese last summer.

That loan spell back in Italy has done him the world of good, with Michallik expressing surprise at his rise and questioning his lack of call-up to the Italy first-team.

“Udogie, who knew, right,” said Michallik. “I think people are now questioning why he isn’t in the Italy squad for the next qualifiers.

“With Ange, I don’t think anybody is surprised. Is that (the style of play) sustainable? That’s the big question.”

Udogie will get his chance with Italy

If he carries on putting in performances for this newly-formed and all-action Tottenham side, then it won’t be too long before he is repping Italy on the world stage.

In truth, Udogie should and can aim for Euro 2024 in Germany, where Italy, who have since lost Roberto Mancini to Saudi Arabia, will be defending their title, that’s if they quality.

Crazily enough, after beating England in 2020, the Italians failed to qualify for the 2022 World Cup for the second time in a row, which just proves that the depth in talent is no longer there.
