Don Hutchison says he’s ‘not having it’ after hearing that Newcastle United duo Harvey Barnes and Elliott Anderson could switch allegiances between England and Scotland.

Elliott Anderson isn’t part of the current Scotland squad, amid talk that he could decide to play for England.

Whilst his Newcastle United teammate and Burnley-born, Harvey Barnes, is thinking about repping Steve Clarke’s Scotland.

During Hutchison’s playing days, the former midfielder had the chance to represent England and Scotland, but he made it clear that ‘I am Scottish’, as he told ESPN

Unless something disastrous happens, you would think that both England and Scotland will be in Germany for Euro 2024.

Some argue, given that Scotland are playing well, that’s probably a reason why Barnes is looking at playing for Steve Clarke’s side, which Hutchison wasn’t having.

Harvey Barnes and Elliott Anderson – England or Scotland?

“This is weird to me,” said Hutchison. “This surely comes down to how you feel. I always wanted to play for Scotland. You should never be allowed to switch in my opinion, even if you’ve played a friendly, you’ve played two minutes, you’ve played an hour.

“What gives you the right to say as a player, ‘right, I’m going to go play for Scotland, oh, by the way, in two weeks time, I might switch and go and play for England’. I don’t understand it.

“Nothing to do with it (England being better than Scotland). I don’t know what these boys are thinking. I don’t understand how you are Harvey Barnes and you want to switch. And you are Elliott Anderson, you want to switch.

“It’s like the Jack Grealish and Declan Rice thing with Ireland. You chose Ireland. You shouldn’t be allowed to switch.”

He also added on Twitter: “Poor, poor. I am not having it.”

Barnes and Anderson in the Champions League

On the domestic stage, the duo are playing for a club on the up and preparing for the Champions League.

That is only going to expose Barnes and Anderson even more, and if they do well, then their stock will just rise.

And, whether it’s England or Scotland, they will benefit from their qualities.
