Dear Child features a sinister kidnapper at the heart of its story and the revelation that their identity is Lars Rogner shows that he’s been hiding in plain sight.

*WARNING: Spoilers ahead for Dear Child* — As a global streaming service, Netflix regularly treats its subscribers to some hidden gems from around the world and a new German series, Dear Child, is currently enthralling viewers with its thrilling mystery as it tells the story of a woman named Lena and her children who are being held prisoner by a sinister kidnapper.

Who is the kidnapper in Dear Child?

The kidnapper in Dear Child, known as Liebes Kind in German, is a man named Lars Rogner, the owner of a security and surveillance company called Rogner and Son.

Throughout the series, the kidnapper remains faceless, only being referred to as ‘Papa’ by Lena and the children, Hannah and Jonathan. But that all changes by the finale when Lars is revealed to be the perpetrator, who was inspired to commit his awful deeds after suffering psychological trauma as a child after his mother abandoned him.

The Lena we’re introduced to in the series is not the first of Lars’s victims. Her real name is Jasmin and she’s been held by Lars for the past 13 years after he kidnapped her to replace the original Lena, the real mother of Hannah and Jonathan, who had died after contracting an infection not long after giving birth.

What makes Lars’s heinous crime even more sinister is the fact that he feels confident enough to hide in plain sight and in episode 5, he even visits the police station as detectives are trying to find the kidnapper, with them not knowing that the man they are after is standing in the same room.

What happens to him?

Lars Rogner is killed by Jasmin in the final episode of Dear Child.

During episode 6, Lars manages to track down Jasmin and kidnaps her again following her escape earlier in the season.

At this point, it’s revealed that Hannah had secretly plotted with Lars to keep an eye on Jasim while she recovered in hospital after she had been hit by a car during her escape.

With the police now tracking him, Lars plans to bring Jasmin and Hannah to a new secure home but during the drive, as they pass a beach, Jasmin tricks Papa into letting her out to pee.

Jasmin had hidden a shard of broken glass in her underwear and after retrieving it, she pretends to pass out.

As Lars comes over to check on her, she uses the glass shard to stab him several times in the throat, leading to him bleeding to death.

The police detective Gerd Bühling had been tracking the motorhome that Lars had been driving and arrives at the beach shortly after, with Lars using his dying breaths to tell him that the police should check the garden of his home, and it’s revealed that this is where the real Lena’s body has been buried.

Is Lars Rogner based on a real criminal?

No, Lars Rogner is not based on a real criminal.

That’s because the story of Dear Child is based on the bestselling German novel of the same name by author Romy Hausmann.

While Dear Child may not take direct inspiration from a real case, there are real-life incidents that mirror Lena/Jasmin and her children’s awful fate.

One of the most infamous is that of Elisabeth Fritzl, an Austrian woman who was held captive by her father Josef for 24 years and had seven children with him before she was discovered in 2008.
