Perry Groves thinks James Maddison was ‘quite pleased’ Harry Kane left Tottenham Hotspur for Bayern Munich this summer.

Whilst James Maddison walked through the doors of Hotspur Way during the 2023 summer transfer window from Leicester City, his England teammate headed the other way.

Harry Kane signed on the dotted line for Bayern Munich days before the new Premier League season started, with Groves adding that it now allows Maddison to be the ‘main man’ at Tottenham, as he told talkSPORT.

When Spurs first signed Maddison, the fans were looking forward to seeing the quick-thinking playmaker linking up with Tottenham’s all-time leading goalscorer on the domestic stage.

There was a glimpse of that in pre-season, but now, the Spurs faithful will have to tune in to England games to see it because it will never happen on the club stage.

With that Kane door well and truly closed at Spurs, it has opened up other doors for others to step up and former Arsenal man Groves thinks Maddison is now doing that.

Maddison ‘quite pleased’ Kane has left Tottenham

“I think James Maddison is quite pleased that Harry Kane has gone,” said Groves. “Yeah, I do. Takes the number ten shirt. He wants to be the main man, which he is absolutely thriving on.”

Maddison is already an important figure

It’s still early days at Spurs, but the signs the new manager and players like Maddison are showing have lifted the club from top to bottom.

The style of play is at the heart of it all, with Maddison recently helping Ange Postecoglou’s side smash Burnley in the Premier League to maintain their unbeaten start after four games.

As of this moment, they are showing signs that Kane isn’t being missed, but their real test will come when they take a few blows.
