Tottenham Hotspur have snatched Johan Lange away from Aston Villa and he arrives after impressing Steven Gerrard.
New Tottenham Hotspur man Johan Lange certainly impressed Steven Gerrard in their time together at Aston Villa.
International breaks tend to be a quiet time but Tottenham have made one significant move.
Tottenham confirmed last Monday that Aston Villa’s Lange is joining the club on the 1st of November.
Lange has held the position of ‘Global Director of Football Development and International Academies’ at Villa but is now heading to North London.
Johan Lange joins Tottenham after Steven Gerrard praise
Dane Lange was actually a coach before turning his hand to more of an executive path.
Lange served as the assistant manager to Roland Nilsson, Carsten Vagn Jensen and Stale Solbakken at FC Copenhagen before following Solbakken to Wolves.
Lange then took charge of Lyngby in 2013 but he only managed them for a matter of months before returning to Copenhagen in a variety of roles.
Villa landed Lange in 2020 and his work as their sporting director appeared to impress Steven Gerrard.
Gerrard noted in December 2021 that he had been ‘really impressed’ with Lange’s work in terms of details and work ethic.
Gerrard added six months later that Lange is ‘very committed’ and ‘all-in’ with regards to the time he devoted to the Villa cause.
That’s an encouraging verdict for Spurs fans, who will now be hoping that Lange can help bring some quality signings to North London.
Who did Lange sign for Aston Villa?
Lange was heavily involved in a hugely successful 2020 summer window for Villa as the likes of Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins and Emiliano Martinez all arrived.
Those three players are still key players right now and the deals have worked out brilliantly for Villa.
Bertrand Traore and Morgan Sanson also joined in Lange’s first season but haven’t proven to be nearly as successful.
The summer of 2021 was a little hit and miss; Emiliano Buendia has been decent but Leon Bailey and Danny Ings didn’t really live up to expectations, nor has January signing Lucas Digne.
Boubacar Kamara has been a sensational signing on a free transfer from Marseille but question marks remain over Diego Carlos and Leander Dendoncker whilst Philippe Coutinho proved to be a disappointing addition.
Jhon Duran looks to have huge potential whilst Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby add some star power to the Villa side.
Villa’s recruitment has largely been impressive over Lange’s time at the club but there have been some misses – something Spurs fans will hope to see minimised when he starts work at Tottenham.
