A new arcade-style game is engrossing and frustrating Nintendo Switch players in equal measure as the internet tries to beat one another at Suika – better known as the Watermelon Game.
An electronic arcade game developed in Japan has gone viral for its uniquely annoying yet charming simplicity. Suika, or the Watermelon Game as it is more commonly known, was developed for the Nintendo Switch but has users across the world begging for it to be made more widely available.
Nintendo Switch’s Suika Watermelon Game goes viral
The hubbub about the Watermelon Game appeared to take over the internet late last week, when one user displayed his amazement at the fact that customers in the bar he was in were enthusiastically watching along as the establishment broadcasted a live stream of someone playing the Nintendo Switch game, as if it were a captivating sports fixture.
“The watermelon was a big deal.” Wrote user Nic Delcambre in the caption of the TikTok clip which has been viewed over two million times in under a week, as hundreds of users flocked to the comments section to ask about the game they had just watched, and shared how much they’d enjoyed what they’d seen.
In the five days since Delcambre uploaded the footage from the bar, scores of streamers and TikTok users have shared footage of their attempts, as they attempt to better one another scores on the endless game.
‘Addictive’ Watermelon Game grips users despite being ‘simple’
If you’re wondering how the Watermelon Game works, you effectively shoot pieces of fruit at one another in a never-ending Tetris-style conveyor belt and watch your score multiply as you smash the correct combination of cherries, strawberries, grapes, etc.
As Delcambre aptly described it, the Watermelon Game is “like 2048, but with fruit”, if you are able to cast your mind back to the number-multiplying game that was hugely popular on mobile back in the late 2010s.
The catch is, however, that there is in-game physics involved – meaning that the fruit will bounce around after you have fired it from the top of the screen, thus potentially affecting the accuracy of your shots.
Describing the addictive nature of the game, one Twitter user wrote: “played so much (watermelon game) today…that game is so captivating even though it’s super simple”.
Another enthusiastic viewer of the game added: “The watermelon game is so addictive to watch. I’m this close from buying it”.
Where to play Suika
If you’re based in Japan, then good news – the Watermelon Game is easy to buy! Just head to the eShop on your Nintendo Switch, search for Suika and you’ll be presented with the option to buy it for 240 yen, which works out to around $2.
Sadly though, at the time of writing on October 5, there is no official way of playing the game on Nintendo Switch for customers outside of Japan.
However, there is a free playable browser version that anyone can access, which should keep you occupied while the creators, popIn, *hopefully* work on expanding the game globally.
Once you’ve got it downloaded be sure to upload your footage somewhere, because before you know it you may be broadcasting live to bars crammed with enthusiastic fans!
