Tottenham Hotspur may now face a battle with Newcastle United in the race to sign Al Ittihad winger Jota during the January transfer window.

Newcastle United are joining the hunt for Al Ittihad winger Jota just months after her left Celtic for Saudi Arabia.

That is according to 90min, who claim that Newcastle are keen on landing another winger with Jota thought to be a target.

The Magpies invested in Harvey Barnes over the summer, but he picked up a foot injury in September and isn’t expected to return until January.

More depth on the flanks may now be in mind for Eddie Howe, with Jota seemingly coming onto the transfer wish list…

Newcastle United could rival Tottenham Hotspur for Jota

90min state that Newcastle may look to land Jota – but he may prefer a move elsewhere.

The Portuguese wide man left Celtic for Al Ittihad over the summer, securing a £25million move to Saudi Arabia.

The move really hasn’t worked out with Jota on the fringes of the squad, in part due to the rules on foreign players.

Al Ittihad invested in the likes of Fabinho, N’Golo Kante, Karim Benzema and Luiz Felipe, meaning there hasn’t been much room for Jota to get in.

A departure has been rumoured for months now and Newcastle could make their move to rival Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham are keen on reuniting Jota with Ange Postecoglou having worked together at Celtic.

Jota – hailed as a ‘genius’ by Ally McCoist – hit 28 goals and 26 assists in 83 games under Postecoglou and Tottenham are keen to land another wide man in January.

Jota would allegedly ‘love’ to sign for Postecoglou, no doubt feeling that he can get his career back on track under the Australian.

Premier League ruling will be key to Newcastle’s Jota pursuit

One problem here is that Premier League clubs are set to vote on whether to ban loan moves between partner clubs.

There is no getting away from the notion that this is effectively to block Newcastle from signing players from Saudi Arabian clubs.

Magpies owners PIF also own Al-Ittihad, Al-Nassr, Al-Hilal and Al-Ahli, essentially making them partner clubs of Newcastle.

Premier League clubs don’t want to see top players in Saudi Arabia making moves to Newcastle, so they may now ban the loans.

A loan for Jota could be ruled out and Newcastle may instead look to recall Yankuba Minteh, who has been shining on loan at Feyenoord.
