BBC pundit Leon Osman thinks Tottenham Hotspur ace Emerson Royal ‘got away with it’ after a VAR review ruled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s goal for Everton on Saturday.

The Toffees believed they were back in the game as Calvert-Lewin slashed Tottenham’s lead to 2-1. But referee Stuart Attwell struck the striker’s attempt off the board after VAR Michael Oliver determined Andre Gomes fouled Emerson in the build-up to the 51st-minute attempt.

Tottenham opened an early lead at home to Everton this Saturday afternoon with goals from Richarlison (9’) and Son Heung-Min (18’). Yet Calvert-Lewin might have changed the game in the opening exchanges of the second half when he fired the strike past Guglielmo Vicario.

Leon Osman thinks Tottenham ace Emerson Royal was ‘fortunate’ vs Everton

Everton midfielder Gomes caught Tottenham defender Emerson napping on the ball high up the pitch with a strong tackle from behind. A chance to send Calvert-Lewin in on goal would then present itself to the 30-year-old on his first appearance of the season after a calf injury.

Calvert-Lewin made zero mistake to place his shot past Vicario. But Tottenham immediately appealed to Attwell to rule Everton’s goal out. VAR Oliver then advised Attwell to check the pitchside monitor and the officials also agreed that Gomes fouled Emerson in the build-up.

Former Everton midfielder Osman believes Emerson got away with it as Gomes’ foul on the Tottenham man was a ‘soft’ decision, though. While there was contact as the Portuguese’s tackle cut through the back of the Brazilian, it was not enough to merit a goal-denying foul.

“It is so soft,” Osman told the BBC’s Final Score. “Emerson has dawdled on the ball and been caught in possession. Yes, if you slow it down there is contact but, for me, it is soft.

“He has gotten away with it, very fortunate. If it is given then no one has sympathy because he has played his way into trouble. Frustrating for Everton who got pressure on the ball and looked to have gotten a goal back.”

Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s non-goal might have led to a 2-2 draw at Spurs

As Osman says, few would have sympathised for Emerson if the 24-year-old’s dawdling cost Tottenham a goal against Everton. Instead, the Toffees were the ones Attwell and VAR Oliver frustrated by deeming Gomes’ tackle as a foul and by also denying Calvert-Lewin their goal.

It would have only been Calvert-Lewin’s fourth in 14 Premier League appearances so far this term had it counted. The 26-year-old has not scored in his last seven games since netting at West Ham United in October. It may have even led to a draw as Gomes (82’) scored late on.
