- A poster that has emerged online suggesting Johnny Depp will return for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been debunked as fake.
- However, while the poster might be fake, a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie is genuinely in the works with The Last of Us writer Craig Mazin joining original Pirates writer Ted Elliott on scriptwriting duties.
- Johnny Depp will reportedly only return if it’s ‘the right project’ after Disney previously distanced itself from the actor.
Since 2003’s first installment, the Pirates of the Caribbean film series has grown into one of Disney’s most popular franchises. As such, it’s no surprise that there is often plenty of excitement surrounding a potential new movie in the swashbuckling series.
Fake poster prompts calls for Pirates of the Caribbean 6
There has been a sudden surge in online interest surrounding a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean movie after a poster for an apparent new film surfaced on social media.
The poster in question, along with a convincing synopsis for the supposed movie, claims that Jack Sparrow will return in a movie titled Pirates of the Caribbean: Demons of the Corsair that is scheduled to be released by Disney in 2025.
Unfortunately, the poster is a fan-made fake, created by the Facebook account YODA BBY ABY, which is a self-proclaimed satire and fake news page that has posted a plethora of fake movie posters in an effort to dupe fans.
Pirates of the Caribbean 6 is genuinely in the works
While the poster for Demons of the Corsair is entirely fake, there is actually a sixth Pirates of the Caribbean film in the works.
There have been plans for another Pirates movie for a number of years as the fifth film, Dead Men Tell No Tales (aka Salazar’s Revenge), was touted as the first half of the final adventure.
Numerous obstacles have since slowed development of the movie, including the Covid-19 pandemic, legal issues for actor Johnny Depp and the recent writers’ strike.
However, it has been confirmed that Craig Mazin (HBO’s The Last of Us & Chernobyl series) and Ted Elliott (1992’s Aladdin, Shrek and the first four Pirates of the Caribbean movies) have been assigned to write the script for a sixth movie.
In an interview with the LA Times published in August 2023, Mazin revealed that Disney had bought his and Elliott’s pitch, suggesting that the project is indeed moving forwards.
“We pitched it and thought there’s no way they’re buying it, it’s too weird. And they did!” he said. “And then he [Elliott] wrote a fantastic script and the strike happened and everyone’s waiting around.”
Johnny Depp will only return if it’s ‘the right project’
Obviously, one of the biggest elements of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise is the presence of its biggest star, Johnny Depp, who plays the legendary Captain Jack Sparrow.
Johnny Depp’s involvement in a potential Pirates of the Caribbean 6 has been surrounded by question marks recently after Disney distanced itself from the actor amid his legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard.
However, in July 2023, a source close to Depp told People that the 60-year-old actor would potentially consider reprising the role.
“Anything is possible,” the source said. “If it’s the right project, he’ll do it.”
All previous entries in the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise are available to stream now on Disney+.
