It’s Shane Duffy all over again!? This Nat Phillips loan spell from Liverpool at Celtic is proving to be going horribly wrong.
The 26-year-old initially joined because Brendan Rodgers had to deal with a number of big injuries at the heart of Celtic’s defence at the start of the campaign.
The Scottish champions decided to bring Nat Phillips on loan from Liverpool until January, with the situation pretty clear in what the task was in hand. He was here for the short term and to do a job straight away, with no settling-in period.
Yet fast forward to the present and Nat Phillips produced his worst performance as Celtic suffered their first league defeat of the campaign at Kilmarnock on Sunday – It was his own goal that opened the door for Derek McInnes’ side comeback.
Kris Boyd stated that he ‘struggled for the full game’, as Killie came back from behind to put Celtic to the sword in the second half, as he told Sky Sports Football (10/12/23 at 2:15 pm).
There will now be a lot of pressure on the Celtic players ahead of their final Champions League group game next week and the clash against Hearts next Saturday.
You would imagine that Nat Phillips won’t play, with Kris Boyd sharing his thoughts on the Englishman today.

“I think is a very difficult one,” said Boyd about Phillips’ own goal. “Do you go and try to engage to stop it because you know as soon as you put out that outreached leg, then there is a high possibility it’s going into the back of the net?
“For Nat Phillips, it pretty much topped up his afternoon. I know he hasn’t played a lot of football. But I thought he did struggle for the full game.”
Has Nat Phillips played his final game for Celtic?
It wouldn’t be a surprise if those were the last minutes Phillips played for Celtic because it was a very poor showing.
This loan spell just hasn’t worked, at all. And you feel that both the club and the player himself will be glad that the deal only lasts until January.
You would feel this will have a lasting effect on Phillips because you can’t see him getting any minutes even for Liverpool now.
The usual suspects, such as Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Joel Matip and Ibrahima Konate are ahead of him, as well as thriving youngster Jarell Quansah.
