If you’ve had enough of the chocolate in your advent calendar at this point in December, then we at HITC have the perfect alternative – an advent calendar of Christmas movies, ranging from festive favorites to our own personal guilty pleasures for the holiday season. Behind the door on Day 16 is an underrated masterpiece in the form of Klaus.

What is Klaus about?

Released in 2019, Klaus follows Jesper Johansen, a postman who is stationed in Smeerensburg, a remote and freezing-cold island town in Norway located above the Arctic Circle.

The only thing colder than the weather in Jesper’s new home are the people as the town’s two largest families have been locked in a bitter feud with each other for generations.

During his exploits on the island, Jesper encounters an old and reclusive carpenter named Klaus who lives alone in a cabin full of handmade toys.

The two form an unlikely friendship and begin to deliver toys to the children of Smeerensburg, slowly bringing a sense of joy to back the town and sparking centuries of magical lore that is still passed down to this day.

Why we love Klaus

To cut a long story short, Klaus is a simply stunning film and well worth a watch if you’re looking to add a new Christmas movie to your annual festive viewing.

Coupled with its gorgeous animation is a wonderfully crafted story that packs in so much heartfelt emotion, whether that’s in the form of a tragic gut punch or wonderous delight.

Bringing that emotion is an impressive voice cast that stars Jason Schwartzman as Jesper, Oscar-winner JK Simmons as Klaus as well as Rashida Jones as a local teacher turned fishmonger who catches Jesper’s eye.

The film serves as a refreshing reinvention of the classic Christmas story, exploring the origins of the Santa Claus tale with guile, doing so by poignantly raising a mirror to our own divided society and reminding us that showing a little kindness can go a long way.
