Jamie Carragher has named who he believes the Premier League Player Of The Season should be and Roy Keane has, unsurprisingly, disagreed with him.

It has been another fine Premier League season with plenty of drama and it looks like there could well be a three-horse race for the title.

Manchester City will be in the running and it looks like Arsenal, if they can solve their goalscoring problems, will be in with a shout of the title and Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool have had a resurgent season.

One player who has done well this season is Trent Alexander-Arnold. The English right-back has had a revitalised season for the Reds and has propelled his side up the league.

Keane on Trent Alexander-Arnold

Speaking on the Stick To Football show, ex-Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher named Alexander-Arnold as the player who could well be voted for by his fellow professionals in the Premier League Players’ Player Of The Year award.

“I think Trent Alexander Arnold would be near the top,” Carragher said. Hearing this, ex-Manchester United midfielder Roy Keane disagreed with the Englishman’s verdict on the right-back.

“I can’t believe how bad he is defensively,” Keane said, firing back at Carragher’s claim. “For a guy who’s played a lot of games, it’s like he’s never played the position before. It’s amazing how many people run past him.

Keane did agree with Ian Wright’s point that in possession, the Englishman is superb and the ex-Arsenal forward believes the argument that the defender is bad at defending is redundant because he is the team’s creator now.

Trent’s rejuvenation

In 18 Premier League games, the right-back has two goals and three assists this season including a brilliant goal against City to draw the Reds level and pick up a vital point.

His expected assists, according to FBREF, is 5.1 which suggests the strikers whom he has created these chances for have failed to convert in front of goal.

This season he has 91 shot creation actions which is defined as the final two offensive actions before a shot on goal is taken. He averages 5.47 SCA per 90, which is an increase on last season’s total of 3.82 per 90.

Whether he deserves the Player of the Year award is another question entirely but it has certainly been an improvement from Alexander-Arnold this campaign.
