Gabby Agbonlahor could be prone to winding up Manchester United fans with his comments, but he was sure to defend Scott McTominay after his latest display.

The midfielder came off the bench to help Manchester United record a valuable three points against their Champions League rivals Aston Villa on Sunday.

After the game, former England midfielder Carlton Palmer claimed that Scott McTominay simply ’isn’t a Manchester United quality player’ and it proves how far they have gone back that they are relying on him, as he told Stadium Astro.

But the Scotland international was passionately defended by Jamie O’Hara who told his fellow pundit that is ‘harsh’ and how he is ‘good enough’ to be in Erik ten Hag’s squad.

Gabby Agbonlahor acknowledged that the hard-hitting midfielder can play ‘100 more games’ for another club.

But he made it clear that he is repping the colours of Manchester United, a club he ‘dreamed’ of playing for and he would take that over playing for another ‘lesser’ team.

This season alone, the 27-year-old has seven Premier League goals to his name and he is currently his side’s top-scorer.

Yes, it’s not a good look that Manchester United are hitting those numbers, but it shows his value to the team, even if Carlton Palmer isn’t impressed.

Is Scott McTominay good enough for Manchester United?

“I get that you love Manchester United, I always said Scott McTominay is 110%, always wears his heart on his sleeve, but he’s not a Manchester United player,” said Palmer.

“You look at the midfield players that have gone past at Manchester United. We are talking about Scholes, we are talking about Ince and we are talking about Roy Keane – he isn’t a Manchester United quality midfield player.”

Agbonlahor asked: “What is a Manchester United midfielder? It’s a different era.”, whilst Jamie O’Hara added: “I think that’s harsh.”

Palmer added: “That’s how far Manchester United have gone back. We aren’t talking about Manchester United going on to win the league. We are talking about them grappling to finish in a Champions League spot.”

O’Hara then debated: “Even when Paul Scholes played with Roy Keane. They still had Darren Fletcher. They still had John O’Shea. They had squad players. I think Scott McTominay knows that he isn’t Paul Scholes, but what he does know is that he is going to give his heart and soul to the football club. He is good enough to be in a Man United squad.”

Agbonlahor added: “McTominay is at Manchester United. The way he speaks after the game – he might look back when he retires. I could have played 100 more games if I had gone to a lesser club. But he might think to himself, my dream was to play for Manchester United, play 200 games for Manchester United.”

Manchester United and Champions League football

Yes, the end goal is to lift the main trophy in England and become champions of the Premier League once again.

But with McTominay or without McTominay, the team have looked a far distance from that for a long while now.

At the end of the day, they only have hope of securing Champions League football this term because of his goals.

He might not start regularly from now until the end of the season, but you can certainly rely on him coming off the bench and doing his best Ole Gunnar Solskjaer impression once again.
