Former England manager Glenn Hoddle believes that one Liverpool player could be key for Gareth Southgate’s men ahead of the 2024 European Championships in Germany.
With the European Championships set to start next week, Gareth Southgate looks set to have to make some tough decisions ahead of the four week tournament in Germany.
Curtis Jones, James Maddison and Jarell Quansah are all set to miss out on Southgate’s final 26-man Three Lions squad for the tournament.
With such a large selection of attacking quality on display it would be easy to predict that Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham or Harry Kane could be the key men, but former Three Lions boss Glenn Hoddle has chosen a different name.

Pardew names player who could have ‘massive role’
During an interview with talkSPORT, following England’s 3-0 friendly victory over Bosnia & Herzegovina, Hoddle named Trent Alexander-Arnold as potentially the most important player for England this summer.
“Well I think it was really interesting that Gareth played him in that game [3-0 win against Bosnia and Herzegovina], albeit a friendly, but in that central position,” he said.
“I think he’s having one little eye on that and thinking, ‘Well, he goes in there for Liverpool, but maybe, can we play him in there?’ Because you’re right, him and [Kevin] De Bruyne are probably the best passers in the division, in the Premier League.
“He hits balls, he hits world-class balls that nobody else can pass, half of them, half the people can’t even see those passes let alone perform them and pass them.
“So to have such a talent like that and not use him… don’t forget, this Euros will won by a team that’s got the deepest and the best squad. Not necessarily the team that starts, and I think Trent’s going to have a massive say in it, I really do.”
Alexander-Arnold’s role
The Liverpool defender was given a starting berth for England’s friendly at St James’ Park but in the centre of midfield.
However, with the quality that is already on show from the midfielders at the Three Lions’ disposal, it is hard to see how the right-back would fit in.
If Southgate decides to line up in a back five, then this could work. Manchester City’s Kyle Walker could line up at right centre-back whilst Alexander-Arnold could push higher, this would bring the best of his qualities on the ball.
