Newcastle United fans are still waiting for their summer transfer window to well and truly spark into life.

Eddie Howe’s side have done the main thing and that’s keep hold of their key players, despite fears that some could head for the exit door.

Even though Newcastle finished seventh last term – a Europa Conference place – they still failed to secure Europe because eighth-placed Manchester United beat Manchester City in the FA Cup final.

Understandably, that comes with its issues, from a financial perspective and bringing in the players they want.

There has been a lot of talk about the club adding to their backline this summer. Tosin Adarabioyo joined Chelsea after Newcastle transfer links.

Whilst sources have told HITC that Newcastle have had a record bid for Marc Guehi rejected by Crystal Palace.

That’s improving the team’s defence and it’s understandable because Howe needs that depth in quality, especially with a few starters ageing and Sven Botman out with a long-term injury.

But how about further enhancing Newcastle’s forward line? And could they make a shock move for an ousted star at Chelsea?

Raheem Sterling released a controversial statement asking for clarity over his Chelsea omission, with the winger left out of his side’s matchday squad that lost to Manchester City at the weekend.

Ally McCoist was asked about Sterling’s future and how his career at Stamford Bridge seems all but over, with Newcastle entering the conversation.

Chelsea signed the England international for £50 million in 2022 (BBC Sport), but he hasn’t hit the heights that he did when he was at Manchester City.

And McCoist thinks that Newcastle, who aren’t in Europe, just simply wouldn’t be interested in bringing Sterling to their club, as he told talkSPORT (19/08/24 at 6:30 am).

“Could it be the end of the road for Raheem Sterling at Chelsea? It might be,” said McCoist.

“He has fallen dead. I thought he had a great start to last season. There were talks of him getting back into Gareth (Southgate’s England) plans, however, he has fallen, as did the majority of the Chelsea players. I don’t know if he is one of these players who won’t hang about if he isn’t playing.

“I don’t think a team like Newcastle, for instance, will be interested in him either. I don’t think Aston Villa will be interested in him.”

Newcastle United’s summer transfer window

You feel they need a few more additions before most people can be satisfied by what they produce this season.

Newcastle have made a positive start after they, with ten men, beat newly-promoted Southampton at St James’ Park on the opening weekend.

You suspect if Howe gets what he wants before deadline day, then he will be a happy man.

If not, talk of his future will only increase, with Harry Redknapp sharing what he has been told about England and Howe.

That England job hasn’t been offered to him yet, but it will be interesting to see how Howe reacts if his country comes knocking.
