- EXCLUSIVE from Graeme Bailey
HITC understands that Newcastle United are still in talks with Crystal Palace over a deal for Marc Guehi.
Newcastle United had multiple offers rejected for Marc Guehi with the latest being £65 million, which is what Crystal Palace were demanding for the Englishman to sell him this summer, but Palace were not budging on their stance.
Crystal Palace’s chairman Steve Parish believes Palace should demand ‘superstar money’ for Guehi after the Englishman had an outstanding Euro 2024 campaign.
Newcastle were beginning to look at alternatives to Guehi and prior to their interest in the Englishman, the Magpies agreed terms with AC Milan’s Malick Thiaw over a move before turning their attentions to the Palace defender.
Newcastle remain in talks with Crystal Palace
Sources have told HITC that Newcastle United remain in talks with Palace over a move for Guehi and a deal could still be possible before the transfer deadline at the end of August.
HITC had reported that Fulham had reached an agreement with Palace for the signing of Danish defender Joachim Andersen.
With Palace agreeing to the sale, it appeared that Guehi would indeed be staying put in South London but HITC understands that the sale of Andersen will have little bearing on whether Newcastle signs the English defender this summer.
Newcastle had believed their latest offer, which was made last week, would be enough to land Guehi, who is understood to be ready to move to the North East.
However, sources confirmed to HITC that the offer was still not deemed enough in Palace’s eyes and that was relayed to Newcastle sporting director Paul Mitchell – who has been leading negotiations and is told a bid of closer to £70million may be needed.
Talks remain ongoing but it is currently unclear if the Magpies will reach that £70 million figure.
Crystal Palace looking at replacements for defenders
With Andersen, and potentially Guehi on their way out of Selhurst Park, the London club want a replacement for the Englishman and Danish defender.
Sources have told HITC that Palace have an agreement in place with Wolfsburg for defender Maxence Lacroix, with the Frenchman potentially on the verge of moving to the Eagles.
Another name Palace are interested in is Trevoh Chalobah, with Chelsea prepared to omit Chalobah from their Premier League squad as they want to sell the Englishman.
