Transfer deadline day is around the corner and Liverpool haven’t brought in any new faces yet.

Even though Liverpool have a new manager in the dugout, Arne Slot hasn’t been backed to make his mark, with one rejection hitting their table.

Liverpool wanted to sign Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad after he won Euro 2024 with Spain in the summer.

The 25-year-old was supposed to come in and fill a much-needed area for the team – the number six role – and add depth.

But Zubimendi rejected Liverpool and now many are wondering if the powers that be at Anfield will still invest in a new midfielder.

Ryan Gravenberch played as the number six for his side’s Premier League opener at the weekend – Liverpool beat Ipswich Town 2-0.

But the Dutchman has been told that he can’t be trusted to play that role throughout the season, also citing his past injury issues.

As a result, the Reds have been told to knock on the door of a player who has made huge strides during the last six months, including earning a maiden England call.

Stephen Warnock has urged Liverpool to sign Adam Wharton from Crystal Palace after his breakthrough campaign last term, as he told The Football Show on Sky Sports.

The 20-year-old only joined Palace in January from Championship side Blackburn Rovers, but pretty much straight away, he made a huge difference and his mark on the side.

Liverpool told to sign Adam Wharton

“I think they will make signings, I really do,” said Warnock. “I think there will be a couple of players to come into the football club.

“I know they were linked with Zubimendi and there was a lot of talk around that. I upset a few Crystal Palace fans by suggesting, if I was Liverpool, then I would be looking at Adam Wharton to play that six.

“Everything goes through that holding midfield player. That’s the way they want everything to play. I know Gravenberch played well in the second half, but in the first half, he struggled in that position. It wasn’t until the Ipswich players fatigued and fell off the pace a little bit that he started to find a little bit of freedom. The issue with Gravenberch is that his form last season has been up and down. Can you trust him as well? He has had a few injuries in the past few years. You look at that and you go ‘do you have another replacement for him?’ Someone who can naturally play in that position.”

Liverpool’s transfer strategy

Michael Edwards has returned to Liverpool and it’s going to be interesting to see how he fares in his second spell.

The club went down similar roads before, Klopp took it, ran with it and won every trophy possible, so from that perspective, patience is needed with Slot.

Liverpool have three players out of contract next summer – Saudi Arabia-linked Mohamed Salah, captain Virgil van Dijk and Real Madrid-linked Trent Alexander-Arnold.

You feel what happens to them is going to be far more important than who the club do or don’t sign before next Friday’s cut-off point.
