HITC understands that Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle are in talks over the signing of a former Premier League striker this summer.
Wayne Rooney was appointed Plymouth Argyle manager earlier this year with the club battling it out in the EFL Championship this season. The club is relying on the former Derby County coach to keep Plymouth in England’s second division.
Plymouth have been busy this summer, bringing in players from across Europe including Victor Palssen from Belgian side KAS Eupen and Ibrahim Cissoko from Toulouse with the club hoping to stay up and then build on that.
To that end, HITC understands that Plymouth are in talks over a deal for a former Premier League striker.
Plymouth in Michael Obafemi talks
HITC understands that Plymouth are in talks over the signing of Irish forward Michael Obafemi from EFL Championship side Burnley, who were relegated from the Premier League last season under Vincent Kompany.
The Burnley striker is available and a host of clubs have been in talks, but HITC is told that Obafemi is set to link up with Rooney’s Argyle.
Obafemi has been almost an EFL journeyman with the former Southampton striker lining up at Swansea City before a £3 million transfer to Burnley.
Now, it appears that Scott Parker, Burnley’s new manager, is prepared to allow the Irishman to leave the Clarets this summer and it appears that Plymouth are the preferred destination.
Obafemi spent last season on loan at Championship side Millwall and the 24-year-old featured in 14 games for the London side, scoring just twice.
Plymouth set to beat off rival interest for Obafemi
HITC understands that Plymouth are set to beat off a host of English sides to the signing of the Irish forward in what would be a big coup for Rooney’s side.
It is believed the likes of Derby County, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Peterborough United were all understood to be looking at landing the 24-year-old.
During Kompany’s season in the Championship, the Belgian manager utilised Obafemi and was full of praise for the Irishman during that 2022/23 campaign.
Kompany hailed the Burnley forward as ‘important‘ after he netted against Watford but it now seems the Irishman is heading to Plymouth this summer.
