Antonio Conte departed Tottenham in far from normal circumstances, with Daniel Levy handing the Italian his P45 following a remarkable outburst.
The 53-year-old branded his own players “selfish” while also pointing out the fact that Spurs have failed to win a trophy in 15 years, leaving N17 having burned any remaining bridges between himself and Tottenham.
Conte’s demeanour at Tottenham was very unusual, and it genuinely seemed like he didn’t want to be in N17.
Now – thanks to Italian agent Silvio Pagliari – we have some insight which explains why that may have been the case.
What’s the story?
Well, Pagliari told Tutto Mercato Web: “I am of the opinion that he has made some personal reflections that all of us who have turned 50 do. I think he wants to coach in Italy and stay close to his family, because time passes for everyone.
“Maybe you get rich but then you realise you’re away from your family. Let’s say he had a bit of saudade.”
For those of you who are unaware, saudade is another word for nostalgia and longing for the past.
Conte certainly seemed agitated at Tottenham, and it almost felt as if he wanted Levy to sack him.
Aside from the nostalgia of his success in Italian football, Conte may have also been in a reflective mood due to his personal losses this season.
The Italian lost his close friend Gian Piero Ventrone back in October, while he also said goodbye to another pal in SiniΕ‘a MihajloviΔ last December.
Gianluca Vialli – another friend of Conte’s – then passed away in January, so you can certainly understand why he would be in a reflective mood, and wanted to be closer to his family.
Tottenham were right to sack Conte
In our view, Tottenham were right to part ways with Conte.
The 53-year-old’s style of play was boring supporters, results were hugely inconsistent, and he did not offer much inspiration to players in his press conferences.
There is no guarantee that Spurs would have made the top four had Conte stayed, and with his contract expiring in July anyway, it made sense to bring his departure forward.
