Stephen Warnock has slammed Cristian Romero for his ‘unacceptable’ actions as Tottenham Hotspur suffered a dramatic 4-3 defeat to Liverpool over the weekend.
The former Liverpool left-back added that Ryan Mason ’shook his head’ as Cristian Romero, from centre-back, decided to play centre-forward at Anfield.
Given that the Argentina international plays in a back three, then it allows him more freedom to roam forward when his team are in possession.
Perhaps not to the extent that he is further up the pitch than Harry Kane, but he can motor forward, nonetheless.
But it’s not just that which was picked up on at Anfield, it’s how Romero just proceeded to walk back into his position rather than run.
Warnock shared that he was watching from near the dugout and his stand-in Tottenham manager was in disbelief at what he was seeing, as he told the Football Show on Sky Sports.
“Where I was sat, I was watching Ryan Mason,” said Warnock. “There was a point in the first half where Romero is a centre-forward.
“He’s your right-sided of a three centre-back. He’s in the centre-forward position. I am watching thinking ‘what’s he going to do here?’ He’s screaming at him to get back in position. And he literally walked through the middle of the pitch.
“Ryan Mason stood, he put his hands on his hips and he just looked at the floor then shook his head. These are things you can’t legislate for in training, then take it into a game.
“How can you do that in a Premier League game? Just wonder up front as a centre-back? It’s totally unacceptable. I just can’t believe it. He is their best of a bad bunch and, as of this moment, he isn’t great himself. Since he won the World Cup, it seems as though he has downed tools and he is in holiday mode.”
ROMERO’S FORM DROPS
Since returning from his greatest night and winning the World Cup, many Spurs fans would have hoped that Romero’s form would also go up a level.
If anything, he has declined during that period and he has played a big part in Tottenham being 5-0 down inside 20 minutes at Newcastle United, then 3-0 down inside 15 against Liverpool.
He is still their best defender, but in recent weeks, he has been one of his side’s worst performers, which is some going given the rubbish the team has put out.
