Ted Kaczynski a.k.a. Unabomber died on June 10, but who exactly was he and what did he do?

On June 10, the news of Ted Kaczynski’s death was confirmed by the police. He was 81 at the time and the cause behind his sudden demise is unknown.

The news of his death shocked the world and it did not take long for social media to trace back some of the haunting things he did in the past.

Who was Ted Kaczynski a.k.a. Unabomber?

Ted was a mathematician turned domestic bomber who went on a mass bombing spree between 1978 and 1995. He graduated from Harvard in 1962 and become a professor. However, he decided to leave teaching behind quite soon into his career.

As per reports, his crime started shortly after he was fired from the family business for posting ill about a female colleague who dumped him after they went on two dates.

Leaving his home behind, Ted went on to build a cabin for himself. He also taught himself how to make homemade bombs and his first attack was on Northwestern University in Illinois. Here, two bombings took place almost a year part and resulted in two people being injured.

Later, in 1979, he mailed a bomb that went aboard an American Airlines flight. Twelve people suffered from smoke inhalation due to this event.

Following this, Ted attacked another 13 times, and in this 3 people were pronounced dead while 23 were injured.

Given that the police were still trying to find the person behind these attacks Ted was referred to as Unabomber by the FBI.

How was he caught?

Ted was caught after he forced Washington Post and the New York Times to publish his manifesto in their newspapers. The article was titled Industrial Society and Its Future and spoke about technology being the root cause of Americans feeling powerlessness.

When the article was published, Ted’s brother and sister-in-law recognized his tone and were quick to inform the FBI about the same.

This led to Ted being arrested in 1996. He was sentenced to life without parole the same year. On June 10, he was pronounced dead. The cause of death is unknown.

There are documentaries based on him

There are several documentaries based on Ted that can be watched online. If you are interested in listening to his interview, Netflix released a mini docuseries in 2020 titled Unabomber: In His Own Words.

The documentary follows Ted as he looks back at his 17 years of terror from 1978 to 1995 that ended up killing 3 and injuring 23.
