The Netflix series Heartstopper may focus primarily on the burgeoning romance between Charlie Spring and Nick Nelson but the teen comedy-drama also explores the stories of a number of their friends, with one of the most notable being that of Elle Argent.
Is Elle Argent trans in Heartstopper?
Yes, Elle Argent is transgender in the Heartstopper series and original graphic novels.
Prior to her transition, Elle used to attend Truham Boys School and was part of Charlie, Tao and Isaac’s friendship group.
But she transferred to the neighboring Higgs Girls School to escape the bullying she received from her peers – and even some teachers – after coming out as transgender.
When her story begins in season 1 of Heartstopper, Elle struggles to make new friends at her new school before classmates Tara Jones and Darcy Olssen welcome her into their friendship group.
Elle’s actress is trans in real life
That’s right, not only is Elle trans in Heartstopper but the actress playing her, Yasmin Finney, is as well.
Born in Manchester in August 2003, 19-year-old Yasmin has been involved in the arts since childhood and was involved in numerous theatre productions while growing up before going on to study performing arts at college.
Yasmin earned her acting breakthrough in April 2021 when she was cast in both Heartstopper and the film Anything’s Possible – although she eventually had to pull out of the latter due to Covid-19 restrictions preventing her from traveling.
After wowing the world in Heartstopper’s first season, Yasmin was cast in the BBC sci-fi series Doctor Who and will be appearing as a character named Rose in the 60th anniversary specials later in 2023.
Beyond her heartfelt acting work, Yasmin Finney has also earned recognition for her presence on social media, earning over 1.6 million followers on Instagram.
Elle’s exploits in season 2 [SPOILERS]
In season 2 of Heartstopper, the school year is almost over, meaning that Elle is beginning to look at where she will study after leaving Higgs and with her interest in art, she starts to make some new like-minded friends.
As was established in season 1, she has a secret crush on her friend Tao, with him also feeling the same way, and the opening episodes of the new installment continue building the agonizing will-they, won’t-they tension between them.
Eventually, Tao bites the bullet and asks Elle out on a date but tragically it doesn’t go well and ends in a heated argument.
Thankfully, the pair reconcile on a school trip to Paris and eventually share their first kiss.
Once the pair return home, however, there is another obstacle placed in their way as Elle is accepted into the prestigious Lambert School of Art, but Tao reassures her by saying that he supports her decision to attend and still wants them to be together despite not being at the same school.
In the season 2 finale, Tao finally asks Elle if she will officially be his girlfriend, to which she immediately says ‘yes.’
