Arsenal cult hero Bacary Sagna has told The Games Cabin that he thinks Emile Smith Rowe should go out on loan.
The Gunners forward is one of the best players to come through the Hale End ranks in recent years.
Smith Rowe burst onto the scene a few years ago and looked like the next Arsenal superstar alongside Bukayo Saka.
The 22-year-old has clocked up 91 appearances for the Gunners, registering 18 goals and 10 assists.
However, Smith Rowe has been struggling for game time this season amid injury issues.
He is yet to start a game for Mikel Arteta’s charges this term, and has made just 10 outings this term.
In addition, Arsenal have other options at No. 10 and on the left flank, where the Hale End graduate plays.
There has been talk of Smith Rowe potentially changing position to midfield, replacing Granit Xhaka long-term.
However, Sagna reckons a loan move away might be the most beneficial thing for him, at least in the short-term.
“He’s been injured at times this season,” began Sagna.
“But even when he’s fit I don’t believe he would be part of Arsenal’s starting eleven.
“However, he’s a good player and a loan move may be the most beneficial thing for him at the moment.
“It will give him some time to play and he won’t have to leave the club for good, so a loan move would be a wise option for him.”
Too good to ship out – our view
It remains to be seen what Mikel Arteta chooses to do with Smith Rowe at the end of the season.
He’s too good a player to not keep in the Arsenal squad, but his lack of game time has been concerning.
Admittedly, Smith Rowe hasn’t had the rub of the green, what with his injuries.
And as Arsenal have momentum in their title race, it’s understandable that Arteta doesn’t want to make changes unless enforced.
After all, if it’s not broken, then don’t fix it.
But in the long term, Smith Rowe will hopefully return to being a key player for the Gunners.
It’ll be interesting to see how he’d fare as a central midfielder.
